MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 gearbox parts

I am in the process of rebuilding a 1275 gearbox. I thought i had some reasonable bits but a trip to Hardy engineering proved that the only usable bits that whirl round are 2nd gear and the 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th selectors.

I see that the usual stockists have the bits except for the first motion shaft. So
1: Are the usual suspects bits any good? or
2: Has anyone got some decent second hand gears?

Thanks
Bob Beaumont

Why not just fit a five speed, it's going to cost the same as a rebuild and all the bits you seem to need new.

Its going into a Frog and I don't want to hack the body about.

Re T9 for Frogeye.I was reluctant, at first, even though I had converted several spridgets. I was reluctant to perform surgery on the car as we had been together for many decades but with hindsight I am now glad I did. The surgery is reversible if ever need / wants arise. The car is nominally 948. I made the bellhousing from a smoothcase so that, apart from the plate, it retains the 948 clutch. Shortened the remote.

I know a very good trader (engineer) who will shortly be selling cast shortened remotes

that avoids scruffy welds and gear shift alignment issues which the 'specialist experts' included on mine
Nigel Atkins

Bob I have a few spare 'boxes, could you get out to Wokingham to inspect?
David Smith

Nigel
I have seen a shortened remote from your favourite supplier. Not a pretty sight. One reason I did my own.

Re a remark on another thread. You are welcome at a Kent meet if passing this way.

I'm very interested in seeing one of the new cast shortened boxes but it'll probably only be a photo for me

Alan,
your offer make me think back hard, thanks for the offer but I never pass that way and I think I'm still banned from Kent

we've been over to Laon Historque a few time and meet up with the Kent Kit Car Club (though I might have the exact name wrong) mainly they had Sylva Furys and Strikers and Westfield 'Sevens', we stopped in the not so posh Campenile and they mostly in the even less posh Formula 1, they were all lively lads, one had a baseball cap with a long grey pony tail hanging from the back of it and when he took the cap off the grey pony tail went with it, made me smile as I was totally fooled
Nigel Atkins

Why are you banned from Kent?

not Ingerlund enough IIRC

and I've not got a foreign car to fly Union Jacks from :)
Nigel Atkins

Hi dave

I am sure I could try and get to wokingham! Give me a call on 07734785245

Back to the gears:

I haven't had any problem with 1st gear, reverse idler or laygear as currently supplied. (Yet, at any rate)

Second gears come through with no sintering on the synchro face, so probably 3rd will be the same. Result is short life of the gear when matched to the std steel baulk ring.

1st motion gears are difficult to find even second hand.
Some layshafts are rubbish, so get the new one hardness tested if replacing.

Bob

Are you still looking for parts?
Dave O'Neill 2

think Bob is coming over here in a few weeks time when he can schedule it.
David Smith

I'm with you Bob - hacking a Frog body in any manner is nothing short of sacrilege.

Sorry, missed that bit.

Just found some spare gearbox bits, so I thought I'd better check before putting them on ebay.
Dave O'Neill 2

I have found some nos 1275 helical gears (ist motion, 2nd 3rd and laygear)and am going to rebuild a spare gearbox. Most other bits seem to be available from the usual suspects, does anyone have any experience of the quality of the first gear ring and reverse gear. I note that the only layshaft to buy is the one from Peter May. Thanks
Bob Beaumont

Bob

I believe that Dominic had a problem with a Peter May layshaft not having any lubrication holes drilled in it.

I'm sure that issue will have been addressed by now, but best to check.
Dave O'Neill 2

Yes, the peter May shaft (the higher spec one) was missing the oil feed drillings. They promised to refund, but I haven't seen anything yet.... Must call them again.

At least they reacted to the complaint very quickly and promised the refund when it was returned, but it should be there by now.... And I had to stump up the return shipping.

But having dealt with a particular NOrth American supplier recently, at least the Peter May guys haven't gone into hiding and do acknowledge the quality problem!
dominic clancy

Thanks both I will check before I order that the layshafts are correct spec now. Any other thoughts on ring gear etc??
