MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 alternator

good evening chaps
I need to know the output of the alternator on my 1976 1500.
I cant see any markings on the top, I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any markings giving the output or the part number if I take the alternator off.
I don't have an ammeter to physically check the output

Hi Tony.

As it happens I've just been through the disintegrating alternator scenario on my '78 1500.

Standard OE fit was Lucas 16ACR rated at 36 Amps. As mine was terminally b*ggered I fitted a new one, but uprated to 18ACR which is a 45 Amp unit. This is because the car has more electrial demands than originally. (Kenlowe fan &c).

16ACR is also called LRA100 which might be on your unit's label.

If yours is faulty the same repair kit fits 16, 17 or 18ACR units and other types besides. It costs about £23 and you can find the kit on eBay easily.

It it's sh*gged like mine you can get brand new for less than I thought. For what it's worth I bought mine from Bad Boy Classic Spares who I found to be excellent peeps to deal with. They also do a blingy chromed version for not much more, if that floats your boat.

Don't forget a new belt at the same time! Cheap peace of mind.

The ammeter wouldn't really help even if you had one. It would only tell you what current was being drawn at the time.

Hope this helps.

Regards;

Rod.

Forgot to mention; if you have to buy one specify Right Hand Fit. I always wondered what it meant till I found this..........

And Mark's right - 18ACR is 43 Amp not 45 as I originally said. Oops.

Hi guys,

The left or right hand fit thing is not really a problem.

To change an ACR over simply remove the plastic end cover.

Take out the three long bolts that clamp the unit together, then rotate the single lug end to line up with the other lug on the front part.

Refit the three long thro bolts and the end cap.

You've just changed from left mount to right mount, or vice versa. Simples.

You're right of course SR, but it's simpler I think to get a RH alt from the off. Mine came with the adjuster lug through-drilled, pressumably to make it easy to change over, but not all do. Some are tapped for the adjuster clamp bolt and would need the thread drilling out if swapped from LH to RH or vicky-verky.
Not that it's difficult - just inconvenient. And it might be an issue if the new alt turned to be faulty and you wanted to return it.
Other than that - simples, as you say!
