MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 Clutch change.

My 1500 needs a new clutch. My Haynes manual (yes I know) says it's not possible to change it without removing the engine! Is that right? I've been doing some repairs over the winter and have managed to avoid an engine removal so loathe to do it now unless I really have to.

Afraid so Eamonn unless a previous owner removed the central floor where the main cross member is and then put a removable cross spar in under the floor.

Mine is original so needs removal but one of our MASC group has an overdrive and has removed the floor under the tunnel for the OD unit and replaced with removable cross spar. He says its all OK and stiff. I can't comment as I have not been in his car and not looked under it. However I seem to remember others have done it in the past. (somewhere in the archive).

I am toying with it as I think I will go OD rather than type 9 or even a getreg or MX5 box so will probably need the space. I won't be removing the floor at the back where the box section is behind the seats as this is where the main strength of the rear of the car is.

Hope this helps, Dave

Yeah, engine out job. Or at least shuggle it 12 inches forward!

That'll teach me to plan we'll ahead in future. A light restoration just seems to keep growing and growing. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

I am local to you and have a engine hoist if you need one

I am smiling at the light restoration comment :-)

My light rolling restoration has continued for over 3 years and I am just getting to the engine out bit.

Mind you in the mean time I have done over 6000 enjoyable miles in 15 months and only had to abort one trip. Slippy clutch? Keep calm and carry on! No worries. I like driving it too much to give up engine out time at the minute.

Grab that engine crane from Mark while the offer is good and before you get hooked on using the car.
