MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 Transmission - 1st Gear Synchro?

Hi, all.

For some time now, I’ve been getting a pretty good graunch when shifting into 1st while at rest, and a bit from 2nd as well. Is this just a matter of worn synchros? FWIW, I’ve replaced the clutch master and slave and bled it quite thoroughly, and overall drivability is fine, bar the noise.

I notice that Moss no longer stocks these synchro bits. :-/

Any advice is welcome! And again, this is on a ‘78 1500.

Hi Gryf;

Yes, from what you wrote, it sounds like the 1-2 synchronizer is on the way out. Wish I had better news.

This coming from a guy with a carb out of tune.

Cheers,
Clive from Canada.

Rimmer Brothers are always good for Triumph parts and I belive they ship world wide.

We 1275 folks manage without such luxuries! Before you dive in to a gearbox rebuild, one test would be to jack the rear of the car up with front wheels blocked, put in gear, depress clutch, release handbrake and get an assistant to see whether the rear wheels start to turn. If they do, then you might still have some slight clutch or pilot bearing drag even with good hydraulics - maybe be enough to cause your symptoms.

What Richard said. There can be a surprising amount of play caused by wear in the clutch pedal and the pivot pin.
My 1275 had similar issues to yours and was solved by what you've done, a bush in the clutch pedal and a new pivot pin. Photos explain more clearly.

Others have welded up the clutch pedal hole and then re-drilled it to accept a new pivot pin.

did you check the clutch push rod mine had gone oval at the end and made it difficult to select some gears

Good point, Mark, it’s worth a look.
