MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Accurate tyre pressure gauge

I have 2 PCL's, 1 digital (cheap oriental) and just threw away the new analog dial unit which read 6 PSI high. Can't seem to get two gauges to read the same. The PCL's I thought were OK but they read 2 PSI different to each other. Any recommendations please? Cheers all
PS this all came about after I darn near understeered into the weeds at a roundabout because I had 38PSI in the tyres

Do you guys have Moroso down there?

now Rod you know you're on one of my pet subjects

2psi inaccuracy seems reasonable, I will explain this below, better to have a gauge that gives consistent readings even if it differs from another gauge's consistent reading by 2psi - at worst your four tyres are evenly 2psi out

I had two metal pencil type PCl gauges they read 2psi different to each other, IIRC one was made a lot before the other, the one I kept and still have has embossed on it 'Made in England by Pneumatic Components Limited Sheffield'

(btw why on earth are you running your front tyres at 32psi, 28 would be my tops)

my wife bought me a posh electronic Halfords gauge and its stated accuracy is +/- 1% + 1LSD (this seems to be the higher standard for digital gauges that I've seen when looking at them on the shop shelves, as this gauge is a good fit to the tyre valve and gives same readings as the other two I use it - http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_786153_langId_-1_categoryId_255241#tab3

for 15+ years I've had two or three gauges plus the totally inaccurate gauge on the footpump

I had two metal pencil type PCl gauges they read 2psi different to each other, IIRC one was made a lot before the other, the one I kept and still have has embossed on it 'Made in England by Pneumatic Components Limited Sheffield'

I also have an analogue round dial ACCU-GAGE (H 60psi) that now no longer seals well to the tyre valve - http://www.getagauge.com/Accu-Gage-HSeries.cfm

ETA: you didn't do what I once done when lent a digital gauge years ago and I didn't notice it was set on bar and not psi as I wrongly assumed

so I set my tyres to what I thought was 22 psi but was actually 2.2 bar (32psi) - as I'd just picked the car up new to me from the dealers I thought they forgotten to check the pressures but as soon as I got on to the greasy back roads roads I knew something was wrong

I've got one of these, which (I feel) gives me an accurate reading, or at least a consistent reading, which is good enough for me.

Are you sure it wasnt your adjustable king pins! Ha ha ha! :-)

well I did have a wry smile when a certain student of engineering or the likes posted to ask about the procedure for them and a certain man of Kent didn't rip him because of this lack of knowledge, I did think of offering a contribution to the subject but you're not the only one that doesn't get my humour

mind, I think I was caught out myself by a wind up recently but I'm ready now for the next episode

SOOooo.... just filling the tire up and eye balling how flat the bottom of the tire is, would NOT be recommened ???

Hi

I've got one of these:
https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/0-60-psi-tyre-pressure-gauge-with-deflate-tpg-060-d

Works well with a cheap foot pump - go over the pressure and use the gauge deflate button to adjust down to the correct pressure.

Ideal Christmas present. Try race and rally suppliers, maybe can get Longacre, or other similar brand if not RaceTech in Australia.

E.g http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/speedway-LONGACRE-LON50401-TYRE-GAUGE-O-60PSI-race-car-offroad-buggy-drag-car-/121204102585?pt=AU_MotorRacingEquipment&hash=item1c3853d5b9

Cheers

Another brand is Intercomp:

Choose a 0-60 model with a button deflate

Nigel, do you look at all these threads as episodes?

Thanks lads great info I shall drop subtle hints at the dinner table as to gifts etc. Yes Nigel we tend to run our tyres at 32 here never had a problem before, but then never ran them at 38 either, very illuminating. cheers all PS I also have an English PCL Probably use this as the reference until proven otherwise.

Rod,
PCL (TPG3 pocket gauge) as per link '+/- 2lbf/inē up to 100lbf/inē' but I've found mine gives the same reading as the other two gauges I've got

Steven,
I look at these threads on a monitor
