MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Benefit of changing from floor mounted gaspedal?

Is there a significant benefit when chaining from floor mounter gaspedal to top mounted? I think the angel with floor mounted feels kind a weird.

Is there a "correct" way off do this or trail and error until it feels right?
Or should i just not do it?

Thanks
Alex

on my car I've altered the angle of the floor mounted (organ) pedal by adjusting the length/position of the inner accelerator cable and putting a set screw through the captive nut (just above where the pedal control linkage meets the inner cable)

Alex,

I switched from the floor mounted pedal (organ type 1275 car) to a top mounted (1500 car) type pedal to gain more pedal travel (to allow full throttle body opening) for my k-series conversion. It was a very simple bolt out/in job. I had read somewhere that occasionally the bellows type (floor mounted) pedal could stick in the fully open position - that would prove interesting!
Johnathan

With the 1500 pedal, it is possible to bend it towards the brake pedal to make "healing and toeing" easier.

Also, I had an organ pedal hinge break once. This caused the pedal to just fall off and I had to just press the remains of the bar with my foot.

Ok, so follow up question. Anyone have a spare 1500 accelerator pedal assembly?

Johnatan, that about geting the pedal stuck happened to me once although with a fiat barchetta in third gear at 40mph and no other car around so just turned the ignition off and pulled over, got the heart racing a bit though.

yes I have a spare...

its a plug and play mod, super easy, and fast... ive done it also and really love it

Its 2 screws and You dont even have to loosen the accel. cable from thr carbs....the worst part is getting the old organ peddle out, as the hinge tends to rust into place

Nooooo
the organ pedal is beter!
Easier to heel toe (no need to bend the pedal) and as it should be.

I love it! As usual no one agrees, Ha ha ha!

If it's that straight forward i can just try it out and se whichever i like the best. :-)

My car is not so much as it should be anyway i suppose.

Mine is a 1500 too so im used to that pedal but remember driving my mates 1275 and the pedal getting stuck twice!!!
Okay, to be honest his car wasnt in top state but i prefer the 1500 pedal ... easyer for vacuming the footwell too! (atleast once a year) ;)

I have the later pedal too, but as I've never had the organ pedal on my Frogeye I can't compare the two.
I also have extra springs on the carb/throttle cable as
1. Scrutineers like to see them there
2. I like the feel of a hard pedal (ooh err misus).
frogeye Gary

I prefer the 1500 pedal. It has more chance of opening the throttle fully on a HIF44. It also does not have a hinge on the floor that can rust and get stiff or break up all together (both have happened to me in the past) and it is just as easy to heel and toe with.
Dave Brown

I tried the 1500 pedal on my 1275, but found it too stiff, so went back to the organ pedal, I worked out that the mechanical advantage was less on the 1500 pedal.

I got fed up with rebuilding the organ pedal device, fitted the 1500 one and am now a happy pedaller.

I've jammed both new and used organ pedal throttles. The pendant/hanging type can be readily shortened to suit heel and toe. The pivot on the organ pedal can rust/seize from water + lack of use.

Hi

I had an organ pedal get stuck and cause the throttle to jam open on my Sprite. Not fun.

Got a secondhand 1500 pedal from: http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/andyjennings/feedback.htm this uses the same two bolt holes as the horizontal cross-shaft that the organ pedal uses, and the same throttle cable connection. Remember to put some blank grommets into the now not needed holes in the floor, and track down the correct pedal rubber (e.g. From MGB Hive, Sussex Sports Cars or Brown and Gammons)

I decided to try the hanging type pedal after seeing various discussions. Both types work fine, but I like Arie's reasoning - easier annual footwell cleaning! Anyway, I initially just removed the organ pedal and made a pedal to fit on the end of the lever arm. Just a flat piece of steel and some supports - I used two nuts welded onto the back of the pedal. Then put a clevis pin through it to hold the pedal on. Seemed to work fine, but then I found a 1500 at a breaker's yard and got a pedal assembly. There may be some difference in the geometry of the two, but my foot couldn't tell the difference. (the washer is just a shim to keep it from wobbling. Better manufacturing technique would preclude that!)

That looks exactly live what I have in mind for mine. Got the same problem as Johnathan had with his K-series ie. that the organ type doesn't work well with throttle bodies as it has too little travel. By removing the rearward ball joint link you gain an inch or so and the pedal can sit at a better angle when closed..

Any reason why you didn't just bolt the pedal on - or drill the thread out of one of the nuts and bolt through?

Do you then need a throttle stop, or does the bulkhead perform the (non-adjustable) function?

Lloyd, I was just trying this setup out, and just removed the organ pedal, leaving the linkage bolted to the bulkhead as it was. (No worries about throttle bodies. We aren't fortunate to have the K series over here. Std. 1275 w/ SUs) Don't know why I didn't just thread a bolt in there. Probably didn't think it through that much. But a bolt should work just as well as a clevis pin.
