MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Brake caliper banjo bolt torque

Is there a torque setting for the banjo bolt (that attaches the brake pipe to the caliper). I can't find a setting in any manual so I guess it is 'tight as possible'. Suggestions?

Chris,

The banjo is obviously hollow so don't over do it as it could shear, its sealed by the two soft copper washers. Not sure of any noted torques,
Its a 'feel' thing again with the spanner size/length giving the torque suffient to seal against the washers.

If the mating surfaces are really clean and smooth, it doesn't take much to make the seal. Tight, but not over-tight.

I use the same torque as the rest of the plumbing, "2 flats beyond snug":

Although the joint is different (bubble flare vs. banjo + 2 copper washers), it seems to work.

Oh, and if you are re-using the copper washers (you really ought to use new ones each time), it is possible to re-anneal copper by heating it with a propane torch until it just changes color.

According to Goodrich the torque is a minimum of 14 ft lbs and a maximum of 24 ft lbs unless the caliper body is aluminium. However, I think two flats past snug sound OK.
