Is there a torque figure for the bolts? (948)
Nick and Cherry Scoop

Not that I am aware of. I remember Lawrence discussing this during the long saga of oil sucking and there was no conclusion if I recall. I have always just nipped the set screws up tight with a small spanner.
Bob Beaumont

Thanks, Bob. They do say that the correct spanner nipped up tight should be right.

Only having fun with the engine while something dries, then it's back underneath.
Nick and Cherry Scoop

Just being nosey. What ever happened to the oil sucking?

Sandy Saunders

It sucked up lawerance and he was never heard from agiam

Thats not to far from the truth actually...haha

Lawerance did eventually solve the issue ... something to do with the ease at which oil was able to flow thur the engine do to various obsructions at really super cold temps

The first WSM I picked off the shelf was for a Metro, which states 8 lb/ft.

Thanks, Dave. I shall try nipping it up with a 7/16" spanner, and then see if 8lb/ft goes further.

What's a WSM?
Nick and Cherry Scoop

Workshop manual.

I abbreviated to avoid having to type it in full. Looks like my plan backfired! ;o)

not to be ocnfused with Wilson-Spratt Motors who built the pretty WSM Sprites in period.

David, that did cross my mind, very briefly and without my grabbing hold of it.

Couldn't remember what it stood for after Wilson, but recalled the bodies.
Nick and Cherry Scoop

Thanks, Dave.
What sort of Metro did you have?
Nick and Cherry Scoop

I didn't - I just have a large collection of manuals.

Well, 96 lb/in (American wrench) was just short of my nip-up. Not sure I trust my torque wrench at those low values, though: it feels pretty slack, and when I refit the sump I believe I need something like 6 lb/ft.

BTW, I went to fit the new oil pressure relief spring just now, and found it to be about 78mm long, rather than 72. Why?
Nick and Cherry Scoop

I always think at such low values, it gets a bit marginal. I have tended to rely on commonsense. ie not tightening small fasteners with a 1/2 socket drive!or where distortion will happen due to overtightening. I guess you learn this over years...
Bob Beaumont

96 ft lbs... HAHA That made me laugh talk to a tire guy they know how to achive those figures and make the part LOOK like its okay

Yes ... that spring is still a problem who ever had china make those most have had a million made cause that stock has been around a good five years or better ... and everyone has it
