MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Camshaft timing

Heya,

Is it possible to adjust the cam timing with the engine in on a 1500...?

I think mine might be slightly off so want to have a look at it. Do I have to pull the engine completely for this or can I just pull the radiator and work on it in the engine bay...?

Thanks :)

I think you will get away with taking the radiator out and also the steering rack. you need to get the crank pulley off, which fouls on the rack and you can't get the rack off with radiator in the way.

why do you think cam timing is out? you could check it before dismantling with dial gauge down spark plug hole to check TDC (if you don't trust your crank pulley marks) then measure max lift at valve/rocker/wherever.

With an adjustable timing gear it is adjustable.

As malc says

or hillbilly red neck style.....

put the rad and rack to get a good view of the timing cover then get a 6 to 10 inch hole saw and drill out the cover at the cam sprocket ... then add a trim ring to the cover and then add the cut outed section and duck tape it back togather... or use pop rivits.

there are are expensive kits that do the same thing for the 1275

I am sure you can adjust the cam timing by reversing the camshaft gear on the cam read somewhere that you can move it a 1/4 of a cog if you look on a spitfire forum i am sure there is a thread about it have you checked if it is ok

The problem is... this is not an easy sunday afternoon beginner project. its really involved and can take a good 3 day weekend if your fully dedicated with a full box of tools

thats why i offered up my redneck hillbilly solution

Well Today I pulled the rad, took the steering mounts off, pulley wheel off, timing cover off and sorted the timing... It was off, not sure by how much but it was off. Should be spot on now with any luck. Put it all back together now and turned it over and it was a lot freer so fingers crossed I'll get her fired up and a lot less lumpy tomorrow! Time for a pint to celebrate now though ;) haha

Thanks for the advice guys.
