MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Changing Gearbox oil

73 RWA fitted with a type 9 Sierra box.

Any chance I may easily get access to a top mounted plug on the gearbox to siphon out the old oil and replace with new? Where may a suitable bung be loctated? - presumably in transmission tunnel somewhere under the carpet....?

Secondly, will the type 9 box have such a facility anyways and will its plug line up with any bung?

Many thanks

Many thanks - is it any easier to attack it from underneath? - with the front of the car on wheelstands

AFAIK no I dont think so as there's a what I'll call a ledge in the gearbox where you can't quite reach with the syphon pipe

you could try with appeture hole cut out first with all four wheels on the ground and then try with front on axle stands, then drop front and raise back on axle stands (wished I'd thought to try but I didn't)

if your fill plug is the same as mine you'll need a 10 mm hex male tool

I got it wrong last post obviously the gearbox with 1.25 litre will have the fill plug lower in the box not higher but those were for 4WD see - http://www.burtonpower.com/tuning-guides/tuning-guide-pages/ford-type-9-gearbox-guide.html

sorry ignore previous drawing as I've just seen a typo from converting from imperial to metric

sorry about that

Surprisingly, one can reach down the side of the bellhousing from inside the engine compartment and get sufficient access to undo the. type 9 filler plug and get a tube in for topping up the oil.
I presume one could also siphon out the old oil by this means. But l think that there is a high possibility that the worst sludgey stuff from the old oil will remain lurking in the depths of the box, waiting to contaminate your new oil.

Better of course to drill and fit a drain plug!

found it

photo from Arie de Best of his g/box with lower drain plug position

so all thanks to Arie for providing information and photo

As usual - superlative info. I will try Guy's method first. I'll do some limbo dancing to warm up....

Mark,
just for your info - if you want to, you can add your car details so you don’t have to remember to put in the posts which model or other details

You can put up your ‘Vehicle profile’ and photo too if you want to – easiest way to do this is click on the ‘View vehicle profile’ of someone else (like mine) then scroll to the bottom of the page you’re taken to and follow the one sentence instruction at bottom of page
