MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Clutch Master cylinder
1500 Has anyone had the clutch master cyl out? It seems its impossible to access the bottom nut holding it to the box... without removing the entire box.

And the box is impossible to remove, because its impossible to access the top left screw. Argh!

Hi, I've deffo done ours, so it must be possible. Try a 1/4 drive ratchet and a longisk extension. The pedal box is not that tough to get out, had the pedals sieze on the shaft a cpl of years ago, pressing the clutch was putting the brakes on! Can't recall it being major dramas taking the box out to frre them off. Good luck, Steve.

Bit fiddley, even with the box out. I used an open ended spanner and went about an 1/8th of a turn at a time. I can imagine you can reach it from inside the footwell if you are bendy! My pedals were well on the way to being seized to the shaft! Cheers, Malcolm

I gave up on the box coming out - the lip that bends over on the near side was way more than on the off - meaning you couldn't get a screwdriver on it without taking the wing off! No joke. I went back to trying to get the master out... I think I need to invest in some tiny clearance jawed spanners... in the end I got the spanner on in a screwdriver like fashion and went at it with a pair of mullgrips - see photo. In all the faffing around - I managed to get clutchfluid to pour down the side of the inner wing and out onto my freshly painted sills! Grrrr

Hi again, Ahh the phiplips heade scres! I remember now. I attacked them from underneath with a mole grip to break their grip, then they come out ok from above. replace them with socket heade bolts , so ite easier next time!

Yes I was thinking of doing the same - but didn't want to bugger the thread. I can't see why those top two are phillips head!

The mole grip method does work ok, once you've broken the tension i found they unscrewed quite easily as the thread is nice and clean as it's inside the vehicle. Another good tip is run a bead of mastic around the pedal box aperture when you refit it or you get wet knees when it rains! Regards Steve.
