MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Clutch slave types

When I fitted disc brakes to the Frogeye some years ago I fitted a new 1275 clutch slave cylinder. This was because I had fitted a 1275 clutch, so I sleeved the original master cylinder down to 3/4" in both bores. This clutch slave has now leaked and dumped all its fluid, o it's off the car and dismantled. I am now confused as to what is the correct type of 1275 clutch slave. The photo shows the internals I have taken out of it. These look exactly the same as the repair kit I have ordered from AH Spares, listed as for the 1275 clutch. So far so good. More pics the next post.

The first pic above is from the factory workshop manual, in the Mark IV Sprite section. The second is from the Moss Europe site. Both of these are different from mine. In particular my cylinder doesn't have a circlip, and the rubber seals are different.

So the question, at what point did the factory change the type of 1275 slave cylinder?

Les Rose

I think I have only ever seen the type in the first photo, with the seal fitted to the middle of the piston.

I don't think I've ever seen one with a circlip.

I'm not sure, but thought the circlip ones were the early type 7/8". Common with minis of the time. It might explain the images as some shown for later cars were just copies of the original early model workshop manual, without always updating the drawings.

I had a look at my spare Nos UNIPART one and it doen't have a circlip

Out of the two types I much prefer the second type ie the one that does not have the piggyback seal.
With a piggyback set-up there is no spreader.
The longer piston makes it difficult to get out when lying under the car in a foreign field.

The later pictured internals viz spring, spreader, rubber, piston is easily removed in a foreign field. I carry various spare rubbers when taking tours abroad.

The picture is of me sorting someone’s Frogeye in France. A friendly French garagiste allowed me to use his ‘tractor pit.
