MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Diff cage bearing puller

Hi Folks,

Happy new year etc.

Does anyone have a decent bearing puller for removing the diff cage bearings? I have an "adjustable" two arm puller, that I ground down to fit the job, but as it loads up, it mashes the shims, then slips off the inner race and begins pulling the outer. Whatever I do I can't get it to grip and pull right.

What sort of pullers do people use for this job? Or any tips for getting this done?

(The diff I built up during the Autumn was a new cage and bearings, which I shimmed from the outside of the bearings. This is a spare I am now trying to rebuild and make usable).

Thanks,
Malc.

For side bearings you need a puller with straight legs and an adjustable cross brace to stop the legs spreading when the pressure is on-
They actually make dedicated side bearing puller sets but a gearbox puller set covers more uses
I'll get a pic in the morning-

Sorry for being late getting back to you Malc. have had a BIG day on the road today 700klm round trip down south and back
Here's a pic of the side bearing puller which works great
Unfortunately he doesn't have a brand name on him but a friend has an expensive Snapon one and it's almost identical
When you're reassembling sit the side bearings in a tub of boiling hot water for a couple of minutes and they'll just drop on

Thanks Willy, really appreciate your help as ever.

The puller I have is similar, but without the "tie bar" hence why it splays out. I wonder if I can modify it somehow...

Ach, this was supposed to be an quick and easy job!!
Malcolm

The puller i had before this one had a slotted plate that the legs etc poked through and had adjuster bolts on the ends to tighten one leg against the other
Bit hard to explain, but you'll work something out
Maybe just hold the legs against the bearing with the whole assembly in the vice

Just had a thought--rare but true
Maybe a suitable sized turnbuckle that you could use like the plate on my older puller just poke everything through the slot and screw the bolts up against the legs to hold them together

maybe

Is this type any good?

Scissors like that are ok sometimes Anem.- On the long side of the carrier they work if there's enough bearing showing, just need to be upside down to get the flat side of the scissors up against the bearing, but on the short side of the carrier you can't get them in there on most carriers
