MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Door Cap Strip

I spent a good, frustrating chunk of the afternoon trying to remove the door cap strip.

It's one of those jobs that you know will be easy when you know how but, despite lots of archive searching and googling I struggled to find any clear instructions and no pictures of what goes on out of sight. The piece that finally clued me in was this: http://www.victoriabritish.com/interiors/sm/

On forums there were differences of opinion over the number of screws or nuts involved and what size they are. I believe the nuts should be 5/16" but, in my case, it was 2BA and 8mm spanners that finally did the trick.

The nuts are inside the door and the screws are 'T' shaped so that the head engages in a channel on the back of the capping strip.

Once the nuts have been loosened, with the door open to its fullest, it should be possible to slide the strip forward, releasing it from each'T' in turn as the gap at reaches it.

Anyway, in case anyone else wants to know what goes on behind the trim, here are a couple of photos. There are five holes in all, it was numbers 1 (front) and 4 that were used on mine. I could feel something without a head in hole 5 but dropped the strip as it came off and I still can't find the missing 'thing'.

I hope the photos prove useful to someone - I would have done the job in half the time or less if I'd known what it was like back there.

Very good Colin.

Now you know how to take it off you will find replacing it a real doddle!

Been there! For me, the fiddly part was slipping a wrench up into the door, trying to engage the nuts. On the bright side, this is a lot easier than installing those weather strips. ;-)

I did mine with the Haynes Guide to purchase & DIY restoration.
Loads of photograps, one with every step to take.

And also the Haynes workshopmanual which is more restricted with only one photo.

Speciaal tool to put on the clips on the weather strips:

Whenever I've had to fit/remove them, I've used a 1/4" drive ratchet and socket.

For me it was extremely easy
