MG Midget and Sprite Technical - drilling waxstats

Can anybody tell me whereabouts i need to drill my waxstats to release the wax inside ? At the bottom or inside the recess ?

thanks
D Stratton

WHY
Mike J Pearson

WHY ? Why are you shouting ? or did you just leave the caps lock on by accident ?

Removing the wax from the waxstats by drilling them is , as i have heard , one way of getting rid of the poor reliability issues of old waxstats .For example eratic idle problems when engine bay is hot!

D Stratton

If you let out all the wax, there won't be any wax to expand when it gets hot, open the valve, and thus allow water to circulate.

Won't the engine get hotter still?
Lawrence Slater

I think the waxstats in this case are those fitted to the carbs as original equipment, and can give trouble with age.
Not the engine coolant thermostat.
JB Anderson

Ah yes, all is clear now. Thanks. :)

Actually I wondered about how to defeat those things in the carb. I've got an HIF44 on mine, but think it contains a bi-metal strip rather than wax stat.
Lawrence Slater

Change the waxstat for 1 or 2 1p coins. It's a bit of a faf but worth it.
J White

As JB Anderson states , they are indeed for the carbs and not the water thermostat

Here's a link for ya...

Alternatively, Minisport do a replacement jet, although it looks like they only have one side - and it's expensive!

Why not just drill 2 ... 1/8th inch holes into the stat face....that will allow the cooling system to relieve pressure while heating up until the wax allows the stat to start opening up

I have to do this on my toyota pick up truck cause the engine heats up faster then the wax stat. Can operate during the winter months... Otherwise the truck overheats during the cold mornings of winter....so the 2 drilled holes eleviates the heat pressure build up untill the wax stat finally reaches opertion temp and begins to function proprly

I know I'm not really answering the question but... surely new plain jets can't be all that expensive and not difficult to fit.

A full rebuild kit for a pair of HS4s cost me £50 and that included heaps of stuff and two plain jets. So the jets alone can't be that much.

Lawrence,
is that Klingon?

Judging from the pic on Minisport's site, their 'conversion' jet has an extra piece for the choke linkage, which I presume is different on the waxstat jet.
Dave O'Neill2

HIja' 'oH 'oH Norm. :) Yes it is. :)

chay' 'oH SoH DaHjaj? How are you today?

Lawrence Slater

Actually, now that I think about it... (work christmas do last night so not too sharp today!) as I replaced my jets with new ones from my kit, I have a spare set of plain ones if you want them?

Can't see myself ever needing to put them back in. Dunno if the choke linkage will be different or not tho.

Cheers,
Malcolm

Malcolm , if you dont want the spare jets i'd love to have them
D Stratton

Give me a shout on mlechevalier(at)o2(dot)co(dot)uk. I am hoping I haven't chucked them out, I had a look for them last night and they weren't where I thought they were... Uh oh...

That said, my flat currently looks like a bomb site so here's hoping

Cheers,
Malcolm
