MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Drivers seat rattle - whats missing?

Good afternoon folks,

Got to the bottrom of a very annoying rattle deep down in the drivers seat.
It appears a tube runs along between the two sides of the seat hinge, within it is a long hoop of steel, this is no longer fixed on the OS end and rattles like mad.
But what is missing and how do you guys suggest I fix it?
Any ideas whould be welcome.

Regards, Tony

If it'sjust the noise that bothers you, squirt in some of that foam that sets.

Just a thought out of the blue - the end we are looking at shows the locking mechanism for the backrest adjustment. THere is presumably a handle on yours which you have removed to make the point. I guess there is a similar ratchet lock on the other side of the seat, operatged by this same release lever. Pulling the release handle needs to free both locks - is this hoop anything to do with the way in which both sides are operated by one lever? If that is the case then the free end of the offending hoop should be secured by the locking handle in some way.

Hi, thanks for your ideas,

Graeme, the locking ratchet is only on the lever side. The long steel hoop appears to be sprung and when the ratchet is released, the tension pushes the seat back forward.
On examination, what is missing, appears only to be a pin that was welded onto the frame, keeping a large spacer washer in position. The seat mechanisim works fine without it.

The rattle was solved by a piece of foam wedged around the steel hoop inside the tube.

Photo is of the other side of the hinge, showing the ends of the srung steel rod.

Oh yes of course! It needs some sort of spring to counterbalance the weight of the backrest!
