MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Earth points behind dashboard

Hi

I am rewiring my Mk2 948cc Sprite with the correct brand new loom, as the car was purchased with old, butchered and partially non-functioning electrics and wiring.

Does any know where the main earth point on the loom behind the dashboard attaches too, as well as two other earth leads on the loom that are inside the car (these last two to instruments?). This question tells you how bad the old wiring was! I would expect the main loom earth point behind the dash to be bolted to a welded on nut on the bulkhead somewhere.

Cheers

Hi Mike, mine is a 1500 so really just bringing you to the top of the list and just saying that on my 1500 there are lots of 'earths' that are part of things bolted to the body and equipment all over the place. I can't find a 'particular earth point' behind the dash on mine although the wiring diagram shows a 'main earth' as in lots of things are drawn earthed together. Came to the conclusion that it was just the electrical diagram drawers convention rather than a true reflection of the wiring loom on my car.

As yours is a lot earlier with much less wiring however it may be that there is such a thing.

Hi Dave

Thanks

I'm not sure about the Mk2, but on later cars, the main earth is on the engine side of the bulkhead, as per the blue arrow on the photo.

The other earths are to the instruments, as you suggested. They fit to the mounting posts.

If you look at a wiring diagram, it should show which of the instruments have earth wires to them.

Gday Mike
Just choose a logical place on the inner bulkhead which allows the loom to reach all of it's intended targets. You can fit a nice neat 3/16th bolt/washer and nut (head on the engine side) then use a wing nut to attach the earth wire on the loom. There should be round connectors for the instruments which go on under one of the thumb nuts for each. HTH
PS the voltage "regulator" needs to be checked, I'm sure that another post has covered this.

Thanks Dave O for taking the trouble to take a picture and label it, and Rod for additional info, as well as Dave S.

This is such a helpful and friendly forum!

Best wishes

Gday Mike your welcome, most of us have learnt the hard way and it's a pleasure for me to save some bloke a heap of aggravation. Never trust the old bullet connectors BTW. Cheers Rod
