MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Electric Rad Fan Fuse Rating

Hi Guys

Looked through archives but couldn't find what I wanted. Just fitting an electric cooling fan setup and need to know recommendations for inline fuse rating to the fan.
Spec:
Revotec inline hose Thermo switch & wiring with Relay.
Vertical Flow Rad
Removed Mechanical Fan
10" Electric fan infront of Rad (Brand unknown came of a 1600GT Cortina but is an aftermarket maybe Kenlowe ?)
I was going to run the 'Live' direct from the battery in conjuction with the relayand have an inline fuse but not sure what rating of fuse to use. As the car is a Mk1 Sprite I didn't want to overload the very limited fuse box!

Thanks

Ed H

20A fuse ought to do, if you are using the right size wire. The point of the fuse really is to protect wiring, and should be a bit more than the constant current capability of the wire usually. For 14Gauge, or 28 strand in old Lucas money, 20 A is fine, and should be enough for the fan. If it blows, try a 25, which will still blow before thw wire ignites if there is a real problem.

I use a 17/35 amp same as in the fusebox, means I can use one of the two spares in the fusebox if required

That's fine.
I am doing a bunch of electrical stuff on several vehicles right now, and it never came to me that anybody would actually be adding the olde tyme glass fuses, when the modern blade ones are so much better and easier to find.

I use a 15A blade fuse for mine, I started with a 10A but after a while the fuse blew (Low speed during the London Bridges run last year when the fan ran for quite a while) So I stuck a 15A in to see if that cured blownitis. It did. Many moderns use 15A fuses on this circuit so it seems to be OK using 15A.

I was glad I'd uprated the fusebox that morning in MacDonalds car park, easy to check and spares at almost any petrol station if needs be.

Thanks guys I'll start with 15A and see what happens

You'll find that a 1/4 by 1 inch bolt works instead of the glass fuse. Unlikely to blow.

Robin-
Hope you are using copper bolts! (but silver are better, if you are not a lazy cheapskate)

Thia useful information gives me a bit of a problem

now I have changed to the new-fangled blade fuse system it's a bugger to find a bolt or screw (even silver or gold ones!) that will fit in the fuse holder

wanders off wondering where he left that old two fuse glass fuse holder...
