MG Midget and Sprite Technical - empty oil filter

I am removing the engine to change the gearbox on a 1500 , when I drained the oil so I could remove the oil cooler pipes ,when I removed the oil filter there was no oil in it and it looked like there had never been any through it . Car has only done 200 miles since rebuild and oil pressure always been ok, could it be the oil cooler needed priming (I understood they didn’t) its connect via a mocal adaptor plate with a in-line oil stat to the cooler. Also could I have done any damage to the engine.

Ive not heard of this one before....

Im guessing a clogged oil gallary from machining

It could be a faulty oil temp stat

Sorry ... im just throwing spaghetti agianst the wall.

I think i might be being a bit thick, car be stood for 5 weeks while i have been away and i dont think there is a non return valve in system so everthing drained back into sump, oil cooler is full of oil .DOH!

Should be a non return valve in the filter - usually visible as a thick rubber disc inside the spin on oil filter.
Malc Gilliver

I cut the oil filter open and oil been through it but retun valve looked stuck open so that will be why not much oil coming out of it so new filter should clear that one up , engine out this weekend and start to fot recon gearbox and sort outsome other niggles.

The position of the 1500 oil filter means that oil will drain out of it after a few days regardless of the so called non return valve fitted to some filters. After a few weeks I would expect the filter to be empty.

So on a 1500, after a few weeks, don't let the engine start without making sure the filter is full of oil first?

Does that apply to the Marina A series engines too?
Lawrence Slater

In an ideal world, obviously, yes.
But not practical, so bearings in a 1500 are up against it right from the start, so to speak.

A series engines have a better oil filter orientation, so if that is what is fitted to an A series Marina then it does not apply.
