MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fitting antirollbar to front suspension

The speedwell never had antirollbar fitted, when i changed to discs in the front i changed wishbones and got an antirollbar, but how should i fit it to the car? Should i weld some nuts underneath to fasten it or drill right thought the chassi and use long graded bolts to fasten it?

Thanks
Alex

the standard cars have two small thick plates welded to the bottom of the chassis legs to hold the ARB fixing clamps, these thick plates and bottom chassis leg skins are drilled and the thick plates threaded

you have to be careful about the length of set screws you use or they can hit the top of the chassis legs

if the ARB is uprated it will pull the bottom skin of the chassis legs away from the chassis legs so these need reinforcing somehow or different method of fixing perhaps as you suggest

I hope this all makes sense

Gryf ketcherside has some great photos of this modified reinforced chessis legs

Great! Thanks a bunch!

But I will go for the bolt through method soon.
Not a lot more work to weld 2 pieces of pipe though each extension and fit longer bolts.
But I should mention that I also want to fit the arb on top of the legs as I have some ground clearance issues ;)

Onno,

Please photo what you do, im wanting to do the same....I hadnt considard pipe thur the chassis legs for the hardware to.pass and bolt to

I wonder if you could use 2 reinforcement plates plates (top and bottom) then pipe thread the 2pipes to the 2 plates then weld it all togather then ither bolt the assembly or weld it to the chassis legs

Yes... that would probably be beefy over built, but i was thinking more in the form of accuracy and simplisity considering I only weld about 15 minutes a year...

And welding pipe perpendicular to a flat surface accuratly with in spec while laying down under the work directly over my face, just dosnt inspire me to think im a god of the slag hammerites

Haha

When we were doing my ARB reinforcements, the thought occurred to me that I could run long bolts through with nuts on top of the chassis legs... But the radiator support structure is welded to the top of the legs directly above the ARB mounts, so we couldn't do it. At least that's how the 1500 is set up.

Hmmm....then it maybe the same on the 1275 as the 1500 rad shroud, is a direct fit to the 1275 engine bay

Worthwhile learning to manually pulse the MIG welder when working underneath, or even above on vertical welds, as you can then get much neater welds or try a slight weave.

I see your point... and sort of agree, but because this weld is somewhat performance structual, I just wouldnt be comfortable doing this weld with my limited yearly alotment of 15 minutes per year

But thats just me, I think real growth comes from trying new things

Hi, There is another way. I have always done this on my race cars.

Hello S

Can you elebrate on your anti sway bar, I can see it, but not in detail

Also is that a bump stop inplace of the tie rod end

Hi Prop. In this case it is probably an 11/16 uprated ARB mounted in heavy duty nylon hydralic clamps. I make rose jointed drop arms so I can adjust the bar and take out any preload once I am aboard. I also use rose joints on the end of the rack so I can get rid of bump steer. There is no droop stop in the picture but there will be a bump stop adjusted for the lower stance of the car. I hope this helps. Simon
