MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Frogeye rear wing measurement

This was discussed earlier in the year but, before I weld my rear wings to the inner wheel arches I'd like to get a consensus measurement from Frogeye owners. If you hold a straight edge along the sill rearwards so that it reaches the lower rear of the rear wing at the bottom of the wheel arch I'd like to know what measurement range to aim for between the straight edge and in to the wing. Looking at the earlier thread Nick got 20mm and Guy got around 32mm/ 1 1/4" in the "relaxed" position. I've currently got close to 35mm on each side and it would be easier to leave it at that if it will look ok when the wheels are on. Thanks for any measurements.

Hi Bill,
I have just remeasured mine now that all of the welding is completed. I tweeked (or is it twerked, I am getting confused) my rear lower wings out a little when adding the triangular pieces where they extend the inner rear wheel arch down at the back. Taking a line flush with the outer lower edge of the sills, extending rearwards, the pointy bit is now 1" inboard of that line. Pleasingly, it is the same on both sides! The other check measurement is across the width of the car between the two pointy bits which on mine is now 48 3/8"

I doubt anyone will notice whether it is 20mm, 25mm or 35mm. A very observant, obsessive person might just notice that one saw more of the tread surface of the rear tyre from dead astern, but I very much doubt it!
GuyW

Guy, Ok, I might stick with the 35mm or maybe reduce it to 30mm. My width across the pointy bits at the top of the rear wings by the B posts is a whisker under 48 1/2" so within 1/8" of yours.

Bill, l was meaning the width under the floor between the pointy bits behind the wheel arches - the same lower rear wing bits you were asking about. It is they that are 48 3/8 apart.

I will check the between the B posts measurement when l get home later.
GuyW

Oops, I must be having brain fade! But it would be interesting to know the B pillar widths as well. I probably thought of those as it was another measurement discussed at length in a thread of mine last year.
W Bretherton

B post points on mine are now spot on at 48" after welding in the rear deck. The impression is that as l have reassembled the various pieces it has built in a degree of tension in the main panels, adding to the rigidity of the whole back end.

But I think l would still avoid allowing young lady 'passengers' to sit up on the back of the cockpit rail as l believe was common practice when returning from the pub when these cars were new.
GuyW

I'm close enough to the 48" across the B posts.

I'll be lucky to have a young lady passenger sat on the Frog Guy! I remember, back in the mists of time, having 4 people in the Mk3 Sprite (2 sat sideways on the shelf) coming back from the pub. I wonder if that's why a leaf spring subsequently broke......

What thread drift?
