MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Front chassis bolts

Hi. Getting ready to remove the engine but when I removed the grill I noticed a loose bolt. There are 4 bolts, 2 at each side underneath the horns. They go down into the chassis into what must be a welded or captivated not. One is either stripped or has dropped. Should I drill a hole from underneath big enough to put a not through and then seal with a grommet? Thanks. Walter
W Clough

I think you must mean the bolts that secure the front shroud to the chassis rails. If it was me I would simply leave it with three bolts. The shroud is still well fixed with one bolt missing.
Mike Howlett

The other option would be to drill and tap for 5/16"

I like the idea of tapping 5/16 rather than leaving it with 3 bolts but will the captive nut have enough meat on it to take 5/16 ?
W Clough

It should do. You're only going out by 1/32" each side.
Dave O'Neill2

either that , or fit a helical to the original size

both ways work fine (Dave's option is cheapest)

Helicoil will cost more but be the neatest solution, or as Mike says don't worry about it.

Today drilled and tapped 5/16". A bit awkward where it was but it worked. Thanks for your help everyone. Walter

you will need to add.a.flat washer to the other side from the new bolt in order to balance out the pivital distortion, =-O

hahah...just kidding
