MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel Filler Tube Gasket

Anyone got any tips for fitting it? I can see two ways:-

Fit the gasket to the rear deck; push the tank up into its fixing position while the attractive assistant guides the lubricated tube up through the opening.

Fix the tank in position; slide the gasket down the tube and try to persuade it to fit into the rear deck hole.

Thanks very much. I much prefer to fit the gasket first, in my newly-painted rear deck. I guess it's tank on trolley jack and control it from up top.
But I won't tell my lovely assistant she's not required.

Just be sure and tell her that this is not a job for a short skirt.
