MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel Tank Sender

Hi Guys

It looks like my tank sender has given up the ghost!

Why is it that the pre 67 cars have a sender that cost £50 when the post 67 cars sender costs £20?

Whats the difference between the 2?
R Williams

Rylan,
are you sure it's the sender that needs replacing

as for cost difference it could be many reasons - less pre-67 cars used to wear components out, or notice, or bother about such things - the post-67 also fits a range of other cars

IIRC the difference between is the way they fit and the arms - others will know better but the way they'll register to the gauge

hi rylan, what yr your car.you havnt changed gauge lately have you. i had problem with my 65 sender. if it is the type where you can undo the 4 screws on the top, have a look inside and there should be a very thin wire attatched to each end. one of mine broke so i just soldered a new bit back on. works fine. only found that out after buying new one for £60. never mind, keep as spare. the early sender has to pair up with the early gauge as it works without a voltage stabiliser where as the later type has one.

hope this helps bob.

Hi Rylan, as bob says, you may not need a new sender. It may well be repairable.

How have you confirmed that's it's knackered? Have you got it out?

Just spotted this thread.

Had the same problem with an AC Ace this week.

It was a nearly new pattern sender that was full of fuel. It had a hairline crack in the groove that the wire clips in!

Replaced it with a champagne cork, perfect fit and gauge working fine!

Bolly cork? Are they immune to petrol then. That's much better than a film canister. Real class. :).
Lawrence Slater

I dunno, but they sure are to brake fluid Lawrence, they were OE on jaguar fluid reservoirs thro the 50's and 60's!

Not sure it was Bolinger tho, more like Tesco's own brand lol

Well if my float continues to fill(see other thread, "Fuel tank sender float. Can you buy them?" ), I'll break open a bottle of mumm greenwich meridian 2000 I've got, left over from the Millenium. I don't really like the stuff, hence it's still unopened.
