MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Gear stick gaiter

Hi. Now that I am stripping the engine of my 1972 1275, I can see what needs replacing. The rubber gaiter on the gear stick is quite tatty where the stick comes through. It is part number AHA 9722 and is out of stock at all my normal sources. Anyone know where these can be obtained? Any UK member got any used stock to sell? Is there anyway of repairing the existing gaiter?
Cheers

I thought you should have one of these on a '72

Walter, do you mean that the rubber part that is beneath the vinyl cover is worn? (vinyl cover shown in Lawrence's image)

My '74 also came with both (the rubber acts as a bit of a sound barrier, and it gives the vinyl cover some form), and my rubber one is also quite tatty, but I have never seen a replacement available.

However, covered as it is by the vinyl cover, it continues to do its job pretty well, and has for about 20 years like that. Unless someone does come forth with a replacement source, my suggestion would be to simply replace the vinyl cover for cosmetic reasons and re-use your rubber piece.

Are you referring to the rubber "draught excluder" under the gaiter itself?

I have the vinyl cover and this is sound. They are also readily available. No, it is the rubber gaiter underneath which I think is to prevent fumes and noise. I will take Norm's advice and put the old one back. I would have been no wiser if I had not been removing the engine and gearbox. Just thought it would be good maintenance to replace any grotty parts.
Thanks everyone

unfortunately AHA 9722 (Support-gaiter and turret seal) hasn't been available for some time - you could try to cut and glue in a gaiter from another model or as you say just put it back as it is, even torn or holed it dampens a lot of noise, hot and cold air

if you find any one with stock then please let us know as I could do with another one

I know what you mean now.

Why not swap back to the earlier version with the metal cover?

http://tinyurl.com/ak32z4q (Ebay) 25 quid. The rubbers for those are in stock in Sussex.

I think they look better anyway.

Otherwise, just stuff some foam or other substitute under the vinyl.
