MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Gearbox help / identification

Hey all

After some advice

I've got a gearbox that came with my resto

It looks clean with good gears however I don't know if it's right for my 73 car

Firstly I don't know if it's got the right remote - regards the reverse switch and 2 nd is the gearbox as a whole for a 1275 or 1098 car

Also if it's correct for my 1275 how do I go about checking it's ok to put in -
All gears locate correctly as far as I can tell

Is there any ways to check ?

Remote has 22a480. Vaf10 cast on top with a faint stamp of 5 dec 6x on side

Gearbox has 22a478 vaf9 on case with 9 0 74 stamped on bellhousing

Any ideas?

A 1098 gearbox would have a first gear ratio of about 3.76:1 (maybe not the exact ratio) and a 1275 would be 3.2:1 (again I may not have remembered the exact ratio but they are sufficiently different to distinguish one from another).

The remote is wrong, as it doesn't have the hole for a reverse light switch. Also, it looks too tall, so possibly Morris Minor.

The late 1275s had 22G229 stamped on the first motion shaft.

If you can check the numbers there, it will help to identify it more accurately.

From your photo, as you've said, the remote that you've got does not have a reverse switch.

(reference photo)

The date stamp on the gearbox indicates it is from a '74, so it should be a good match for your '73 car (there weren't any changes to the gearbox at that time).

Just need to find a later remote housing with the switch then.

hey , thanks thus far - yea thought the remote was wrong

the number on the shaft is

22g171

the remote i guess i can source however the main gearbox needs to be 1275 - does this number help identify it easier?

thanks

sorry to bear bad news, 22G171 is a Morris Minor 1000 box.

another thing to add to the shopping list then - just shows you you can't trust some people when buying a resto project grrrr
