MG Midget and Sprite Technical - handbrake cable length

To cut a long story short... i am putting back the original handbrake mechanism. It was taken off to try and do something to improve the old non-std, non-working brakes that were fitted.....

I have the cable outer, and a picture of what it should look like, but no cable inner...

Does anyone have one handy to measure the inner cable length, hole centre to hole centre ?

if not i'll have to use a piece of string and try and work it out :)

if i can get that dimension i can get a cable made up...

i'm also missing the rods that go to the drum brakes, but i can make some of those up easily using screwed rod and clevises....

thanks in advance...

Andy,

You will need to be more specific and make and year... there where several variations so multiple differant cable lengths

I have a NOS one waiting to go on my 1971 Mk3 and its 32 inches between clevis pin hole centres. I am hoping its a bit shorter than the one on at the moment as its run out of adjustment!(stretched I guess)

Handbrake cables were the same on all Spridgets up to the late 1500s in 1977, when the cable and mechanism changed to a different design.

From that point, there were two different length cables - one for steel wheels and one for wire wheels, due to the different axle widths.

Yup they stretch.

No reason to throw it away though. I took a little out the middle (in the tunnel section) -- about 2 inches -- and joined it together again with my mig. Works a treat.

Will it stretch more? Probably. But not so far, and I've given it some good tugs. Locks the rear wheels. I'll see what Mr MOT man thinks. It's due next week.

Lawerance,

If thats true and the MOT man is looking down the tunnel to inspect the E. BRAKE Cable...

He needs a shot of cheap tequila to kill the bug that craweled up his ass....im pretty sure, I could never live in the uk

At some point, you guys need a revolution to regain your freedom, ... instead of an arab spring, call it an old rich white guy winter...hahaha

Yup it's true Prop. I won't tell the MOT chap, and I'd be very suprised if he spots my welded cable.

I'll let you know.

Thanks Colin 32" seems about right.
No MOT issues out here. In fact there is a yearly test but much less stringent than UK, they test the brakes and pollution levels and that the lights and indicators and brake lights work.
However when you go to the testing centre you get asked if you actually want the test or just want the certificate. It costs more if you actually want the test doing.....
Andy Phillips (frankenfrog)

I'll bring my Sprite out there for a "test" then . LOL.
Lawrence Slater

Same type of testing here andy...but we dont get a choice of test or just certificate....can they just email that to you.....hahshaha

What I do is give the book and some money to the missus, she goes to the office just around the corner then a week later a new tax/insurance/MOT disk appears
