MG Midget and Sprite Technical - How does the front wing fit?

This probably seems like a pretty basic question... but how does the front wing fit at the front? i.e. how does it fit around the grille area/valance/slam panel. Anybody got a picture of their car without the grille on?

Just wanted to check as I can't seem to see a 'tidy' way to fit it with all the holes lined up properly. The wings weren't fitted when the car arrived many years ago!

Cheers all,
Malcolm

At the front, three bolts into the front valance below the grill opening and then two to the end of the slam panel.

Aye, I got that far thanks Guy, just a bit confused as I can't seem to get everything to line up correctly. Bit hard to describe the problem. Does the grille opening on the wing slot inside the grille opening on the slam panel? Or rest on the outside?

Maybe I should just bash it with a hammer! :-)

Sorry, misunderstood what you were after.

On mine, on the vertical edge of the grill opening, the wing pressing has a sort of 1 1/2" tab. And this is hooked over the corresponding edge of the "mouth" of the opening. i.e. the tab is closer to the car centre line than the shaped edge of the grill opening. Ultimately this is then normally covered by the bright finishers. (not referring to Cav just now)
Guy Weller

Ah, so just the tab? Think I get it now. I was sort of trying to get the whole thing to lock together somehow. Hard to explain as you can tell! Thanks yet again Guy.

Mind you, Malc, I can't guarantee mine is right! When I got this car it had no front valance or slam panel. Or rather it did, but it was in a very poor state and disintegrated completely as I dismantled it.
Guy Weller

It seems to make sense in my head now so I will try it next time I am out in the garage.

All part of the ongoing door gap problem, which I think I have a solution to. Unfortunatly I have kind of lost motivation at the moment due to this and that!

Glad you have a possible solution to the door gap (cill alignment) problem. Hope it works! In essence, I think that your cill is rotated a degree or two anticlockwise in relation to the rest of the car.

I suggested correcting this by slitting around the A post but the other way to do it would be some slitting and re-welding in a horizontal line directly above the inner cill / outer footwell side panel joint. Then adjusting with jacks or other supports under the cill at front, back and beneath the A post. And use the door to check adjustment before rewelding.

Did you try checking for twist in the cills by sighting across two straight edges?

You've got me worried about my frog now. It has been on a rotisserie for so long I am now wondering if the shell has banana'd! I think I need to get it back on a level floor and do some checking!
