MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Identification please

Hi,

I need some help from the great collective again!

Can anyone tell me what this bar is for please?

One end is attached with a bolt but the other has not apparent place to go?!?!?!

Many thanks

James

J Paul

Its an exhaust steady - fixed to a clip around the exhaust pipe.
See the Moss spares book page 35.

I've a spare book if you need one.

I haven't got one of them mister, might be a good addition though.

make sure you tighten the clutch slave bolt soon

just saying like...

Must have been swung round to keep out of the way as the exhaust isn't on that side on an A series car. Also I've never seen one anyway.
David Billington

yes exhaust steady. got one on my mkii.
trebor

Certainly plenty of rust proofing on that car.:)
Greg H

as others have already put that is the strap that goes from the g/box bracket to an exhaust clamp that was still available when I bought one last year

but the bracket you have on the gearbox I don't think you can get at the moment so don't lose it
Nigel Atkins

Well you live and learn don't you!
Andrew McGee

the information would be in the reprint of the factory Parts Catalogue and with various description and probably parts number on suppliers catalogues

of course that might also be the lever to engage the facility for four reverse gears, three of them with synchro too :)
Nigel Atkins

Hi,

So here is a picture with the exhaust manifold still in place. I should think the bar will reach across. Richard and Bob should that work with the clips that you have?

Kind regards

James

J Paul

Its intended to fit the standard exhaust system.
Derek Stewart

Hi Derek,

I have just noticed on the Moss catalogue that my exhaust isn't standard. The manifold needs replacing anyway, so I'll have a look when I get round to putting it all back in about 2 or 3 years time!!
J Paul

yes just the single pipe exhaust. but you could probably make something up for the double pipe.
trebor

Hi Bob,

I think you can just about make it out from the picture that the manifold has rusted on the join. When I took it off it didn't look in great shape so I would replace it with an original at some point.

Thanks

James

Here is a pic of mine - not the easiest place to photograph - its very cold on the garage floor !!!

Mine is a tubular Maniflow and its attached just where it goes into one pipe.

richard boobier

Thanks Richard for the photo.

Moss don't sell the exhaust bracket anymore so I'll have to hunt around to find one at some point or get bodging!!

J Paul

The bit that goes around the pipe is the type of exhaust clamp that Maniflow use/make and numerous ones came with the system I obtained from them - the flat bar bolted to that.

You seem to have all the other bits.
