MG Midget and Sprite Technical - King pin 'cotter pin'

The new cotter pins I've put in have gone into the hole very deep… with quite a bit of excess threads coming out the bottom - you might be able to tell from the photo… I'd say it was about 6mm deep in the hole

Its pulled up nicely on the taper and firmed up well, so I'm not worried - just a bit surprised and wondered if anyone else had experienced this?

Christian Carter

Christian, yes mate the last one I popped in is just like that

the taper is quite shallow and I expect a few thou of difference on the grinder would make a tight or loose fit likely

If you can get a grip with the nut on the other side, don't let it worry you but if the thread doesn't bottom against the shaft it would be a different matter to me and I would take/send it back looking to buy a thicker one (at the taper)

(small washers are your friend here though, an easy fix)

Thanks Bill, good to know - I actually had some spare pins from ebay from ages ago, and they were the same as the ones in the rebuild kit.

Seems fine though, it locks in place - which is all its meant to do.

Cheers

Hi Christian,
Did I imagine it, or did I read that you've fitted the new bushes in the stub axles, and they didn't need reaming? -- You borrowed a reamer and didn't need it? I can't find the thread now, but very recently.

If I'm not going barmy, how did you fit the new bushes and get them aligned, so as to not need the reamer?
Lawrence Slater

Btw, does anyone know where to buy decent cotter pins from... I'm struggling to find any with a decent thread... perahps its the nuts that they come with... but they seem loose and easily strip before i've even compressed the spring washer

maybe I should just find some nuts instead...are they 1/4 unf?
Christian Carter

Lawrence,

No, you misread my post... I haven't replaced the bushes at all - in fact it was a tight squeeze to get one of the king pins in at all - I nearly reamed the old bushes!
Christian Carter

Cheers Christian. Well that was a stroke of luck then. Bushes spare for the future, -- if you ever need them.
Lawrence Slater

well - i want to get a second set of stub axles off fleabay so I can rebuild a spare - but that is proving tougher that I thought
Christian Carter

Keep looking. I bought a set complete with shock absorbers, wishbones and hubs for £85 last year in the depths of winter. Complete bargain as all of it was in very good nick. Maybe be prepared to travel a bit to collect.
Lawrence Slater

Yep, will do. I just missed out on a set of hubs for £45 (no wishbones or shocks) - but ironically i got stuck in traffic on the way back from picking up the reamer so i couldn't bid!
Christian Carter

Christian I have a load of spare stub axles / spindles, can do you a pair for less than the price you quoted... email mgsmithy on yahoo dotcodotuk
