MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Latest Version of Oil Catcher Tank

It looks like no matter what I do to fix the rear oil leak there will allways be a drip so I have made a more professional catcher tank to replace my original lash up - an old tin can.

Even though the tin can caught most of the oil, underfloor air flow did cause some splashing further to the rear so I have made the front a closer fit to the sump. Also I had drips from the split pin and the bellhousing/engine join so have made the tank a little longer. Some may notice the pop rivets securing the two lugs. I drilled the holes for these with everything in situ, under the car so I could get a good fit. The rivets are sealed but I will be empting the tank before the oil gets to their level.

Cheers

As I put in your John Twist JB Weld thread, ----

Why not fit a pump to suck up the expelled oil? Just the press of a button say once a week, and the tray would never overspill, saving you you the hassle of getting under it to drain it.

Example pump. There are probably better versions out there.

Anamn, if you were having to pump it out once a week then you would have a pretty serious oil leak!

Plus, by then the oil is likely to have a few extra 'additives' that are probably not good for returning to the engine.

All you need is to put in an oil absorbent pad. 40 X 50 holds a litre of oil. So trim to fit - plenty on eBay - job done.

Hmmm - bit of a bodge to me. Perhaps investigate if the leak at the seal is due to over-pressurizing the crankcase rather than the seal itself?
Oggers

Or carry one of these in the boot (in a suitable plastic cover) for use when parked?

I agree Guy, if it needed draining once a week, it would be a real problem. I was just suggesting that by using the pump, which would be very easy with just a button press, you could be sure it would never overspill the drip tray. And I certainly wasn't suggesting returning the oil to the engine.

Is the oil leak that bad? Doesn't it just provide a bit of extra rustproofing further back down the car?

Back to oggers point, when my oil leaks were at their worst, it was because there was excessive pressurisation down the bores.
