MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Lubrication of Top Trunnions /Rachmacb

I have Peter May top trunnions fitted and am concerned about the lubrication. The oilite bushes were soaked etc, but have been sitting for a while and there is a lot of noise, if not coming from the bushes, at least transferring through them.
On reading the forum I came across a comment form Rachmacb saying
"If you fit Peter May negative camber trunnions (and for normal road work you don't really need them) then make sure you put grease nipples on first. "

Has any one done this, and if so have you any photos of the position of the grease nipples?
Did you create a scroll in the bush to distribute the lube?
Also do you use grease or oil?
Thanks in anticipation.

grease nipples go in from above, at the highest point of the bushes' arc. On mine the bushes are pressed in from either side and don't meet in the centre, there is about 3mm gap. This is where the nipple will allow grease to be fed into.

Women ... augh!

Hahaha...

if rach wrote it, you can cash it at the bank ... she knows her 1500s and not afriad to trash a car in a race

I think she is now married with a rug rat ... but I doulbt that even took the piss out of her blood...

Many thanks. The details for the greatest makes sense and I will do that over the weekend.
I would appreciate any thoughts regarding the grease vs oil use.
Prop, I am sure rach will appreciate the sentiments. After all marriage and family Hasn't stopped the rest of us, it just slows up the finance!

I use grease but only because that is what's in the grease gun, I don't have an oil gun! You mentioned Oilite bushes - are they? or are they just the same bush material as the kingpin bushes - which are lubed with grease.

When I bought mine from Peter May I'm pretty sure I was told just to grease them well when I assembled them and that would suffice.

Shame this didn't crop up a day earlier as I was visiting the hallowed ground of Peter May's premises yesterday picking up some shiny new front springs and I could have asked.

You could always try emailing him as I've had some of my questions answered that way.

My PM trunnions showed hardly any wear after about 5k but when I rebuilt the car I decided to fit grease nipples to them. Much better knowing they are now easily lubricated. I did the solid ARB mounts at the same time. It's fairly obvious on the trunnions where to fit the grease nipples.

I'd use grease over oil, yes they are oilite bushes but in the application they are used grease is always going to last longer and there is less chance of it running onto the brake disc. As it is you have to be very careful greasing them as they are only about 1/4 inch away.

Thanks. I had wondered about the proximity of the brakes if using oil. Sounds like grease works so I will give it a go. Many thanks to one and all.

I had Peter May trunnions but removed them as the ride was much too harsh for a road car, at the moment I have yellow poly bushes, and they are great on a smooth road, but there are not many of them in the UK a the moment, so am thinking of reverting to old fashioned rubber.

Blue Polybush (note the capital) works well on rotten roads.

Jeremy

Are the Blue softer than the Yellow, might give them a try.

Note the P again, Polybush do blue (comfort) and red (performance), mine are blue. Looking at their site it looks like they now do the blue in black(!) for authenticity.
