Ebay item 271422407619

Yes tempting to laugh; but perhaps we are dealing with a dyslexic here?

Alex

But ebay has a spelling checker button just above the text box where you type in the auction text.

In fact, it's at the end of the line of icons one of which is the button that sets the font!!!!

How would he know that?

I am glad that some people here had the benefit of a decent education - sadly many haven't. To ridicule their communication on an open forum is not on in my book.

I have been a member of this forum for many years and stopped posting here once before because of some members' behaviour - sadly I am going to do so again - anyone who wants my advice can find me on my forum (http://ultra.octarine-services.co.uk/) or via the email link above.

Enough said.

I saw someone slip on a banana skin.

I'd like to laugh about it, but the PC police wouldn't like it.

Balls to that, I'll laugh until I crack a rib.

The plain fact is that misfortune is often funny. Whoever wrote that, even if he doesn't like it, even if in the great scheme of life it seems unfair, it's bloody funny. LOLOLOLOL. :).

Blimey, I go away for 24 hours and come back to controversy. I've got OCD when it comes to written English and that auction text triggered off my 5% Autism in the social skills area and prompted me to post it.

I must remember to handle my problems better.

Texting is a BIG problem with my OCD. Have you ever tried to find a semi-colon on a mobile phone? Takes me hours to compose a text what with looking for commas and apostrophes and capitals to start a new sentence.

What really drives me around the bend though is split infinitives. I watched one episode of Star Trek in the 1970's and it upset me so much I never watched another.

Phew. Got that off my chest. Thread closed?

Rob
Rob aka MG Moneypit

Rob. C U 2nite. Innit.

Bernie.
b higginson

Rob,

I'm with you. However, I read an article recently (The Times?) justifying split infinitives. "Language develops". I think we are losing!
Ray Rowsell

"I watched one episode of Star Trek in the 1970's and it upset me so much I never watched another."

Shame on you, for not watching that classic series. You should have gone boldly on watching it. :).

Speaking of taking the piss out of the less fortunate.

It's a fun, and national pastime, mocking the afflicted.

I'm sure many of you remember this.

Idont know that the inflicted take an ridicule for there inadequacys.

For me my poor speeling ability is just a hiccup thats shared by many, I laugh about it, at 50, I doulbt its something ill cure in this life time

Most people like me over 30, have the same view I have and have learned to compensate for it, example, I never left home without my 20,000 word book

Its a strange brain thing that I think effects more people then we even know

For me, 2 opportunity s have worked out for me, the more I text and comment, the more stable my spelling has become, an 2nd, is my phones A.I.spell check is much better then the last phone and makes spelling checks and corrections on the fly

So if danialdavid, should visit here, I doulbt he would find us offensive, he has heard it all his life, and wont caring any meaning to him...like water off a ducks back.

I dont know why I cant spell very well, im just Soooo glad, I can read anything in print, those that cant read or read.very well are the ones I truely feel sorry for, now thats a the defination of a greek tragady, esp in todays world.

Pete Ottewell

Bernie, I could be in the Yellow Peril tonight.

Lawrence, I caught up with Star Trek (TNG) when that great Shakespearean actor Partrick Stewart kicked the split infinitive into touch.

Ray, the world is doomed!!!

Prop, I enjoy reading your tirades. Particularly liked the M*****la one. You've got a wicked sense of humour.

Who was it said Britain and America are two nations separated by a common language?

I wish I had had a good education. I failed my 11 plus (not enough literary knowledge despite the fact I was reading car workshop manuals from an early age, rather than Shakespeare). I failed my 13+ despite coming second in my year for mathematics. These were the times when your birth certificate stated your Father's occupation and had a BIG impact on your further education status.

After school I went to Technical College, after that I did a Radio Communications course at another college which got me into a Polytechnic (second rate University) where I got a degree in Solid State Physics. Then into computing where I have been since 1974.

What I have achieved is by bl**dy hard work, nothing else.

Is this the end? (of this thread)

Hi Daniel,

I didn't spot the snot on the seats. ;).

I see what you mean Pete. With that haircut, he's gotta be joking. :).

But kinnock still wins, hands down --(in the water). LOL.

Rob,

share your syntax and grammar concerns. For semi colons when texting try an iphone (new or like mine elderly), even for a luddite like me it's easy.

This thread raises a key point in communication: manners exist to assist everyone in getting along.

When eating with others, it goes more smoothly when everyone at the table is ingesting their food in a mutually agreeable manner. If someone is behaving very much differently than the others, it tends to be perceived as being disruptive, or rude.

This is not a recent thing, or imposed from the outside, it is just the way our brains work as social animals.

Using care with spelling and grammar are similar things to chewing with your mouth closed, and swallowing your cud before speaking, helping those you are interacting with because they are made more comfortable when you do them, and because doing things like that to get along shows others that you care about how you are perceived, and, frankly, it shows you care about who you are with and how they feel too.

The challenges in all of this are:
- there are very many levels to take this to. Some take things too far and get terribly upset by a misused salad fork / possessive apostrophe.
- some people take pleasure in making others uncomfortable.
- the standards, like language, are always shifting. Some may hang on to treasured, old fashioned standards, some may quickly embrace new ones, and some delight in smashing and changing.
- there are mentally challenged, and physically challenged who, try as they might, simply can not measure up all of the time (or at all). Others tend to perceive them as rude, or dumb, because they don't understand why they are like that.
- doing all of these things well takes extra effort (as does anything that is a part of being a good friend, family member, participant in a social gathering).

Regarding the handicapped, or slow, when it is someone we know, then it is easier to compensate for what they do. The internet makes that extra difficult because it is so anonymous.

Finally, the "messy roommate" scenario tends to play out, when the dirty roommate doesn't see what the problem is, and the clean roommate doesn't see why the messy one is being such a dick.

":O)

Norm Kerr

As is often the case with threads Norm, this thread has mutated somewhat from it's originally intended purpose.

My sense of it's original intent, was that it was no more than to bring to our attention, something mildy ammusing. I think it did that rather well, and wasn't a piss take per se, of the Ebay poster.

Life throws up all kinds of funny scenarios, that was one of them.

More broadly though, you're right Norm. How can we all get along, if we don't at least try to follow some
"norms"? Pun intended. :).
Lawrence Slater

grin
Norm Kerr

Norm,

Very good analogy ....well done.

If I can add to it,

It also depends on the type of communication we are apart of, if we are on twitter, with only 140 characters then poor grammer and spelling is the standard

You cant go to chucky cheese on a friday night and expect french waiters in long tail tux, and wine menus

Note... chucky cheese is a pizza crack house for children under 8 years old....pure suger high madiness

And the reverse is also true.... some establishments are very high brow, with pomp and ceremony and there all places where high communication etiquette is essential....your companys cimpanys inner web, is a good example if your a scientist/ researcher, or a crime lab analyst (CSI)

Prop
Prop and the Blackhole Midget

yes but who has the "right" or "authority" to set their standards or demand or expect those chosen standards to be obeyed by the rest/others

if I was young I wouldn't allow “the oxygen thieves” to dictate the present and future as they've already plundered the past, present and future for the benefit of themselves and their kith and kin
Nigel Atkins

I think there just universial unwritten standards we live by that tell us whats accepted and whats not

Prop
Prop and the Blackhole Midget

"if I was young I wouldn't allow “the oxygen thieves” to dictate the present and future --- "

Not often I agree with you lately Nigel, but on this I pretty much do,-- even though I said I broadly agree with Norm too, that was really an excuse to add a cheap pun at Norms expense. ;).

Anyway, when I was young I challenged the way things were done/said, so why should I try to dicate that kids today just accept what is? Todays kids will rule the world, just as kids of my youth rule it today, pretty much, with a few young-uns in there as well.

Things and language will change. The accepted today will often become the unacceptable tomorrow.

That's life.

Under the old testament Prop, there were a shed load of universal standards. Mostly all gone now.
Lawrence Slater

Yes good gramma has gone out the window with manners and consideration for others. The whole world seems to be dumming down. Is this progress?
Pete Ottewell

Sorry lawerance

Im just old fashioned and set in my ways, but ill never agree with chickens having having gay sex with cows.

Just me
Prop

Progress.
-- forward or onward movement towards a destination.

So yup Pete, I guess it is.

The dabate is about the worth of the destination. Some like it, others not. The beauty though, is that we don't live forever.

So if you find the present, not to be the future you dreamt of when you were younger, don't worry, you'll be dead soon enough, and will no longer have to endure it :).

Prop. Are you opposed to gay sex per se, or sex between different species? Or both?
