Checked filler cap breather not blocked?
GuyW

As said, most likely the wrong type of filler cap, or faulty breather, in the cap.
As the engine obviously starts again, I presume you have to wait a while before it will run which would indicate the vacuum in the tank reducing to atmospheric pressure, allowing the fuel to be pumped to the engine again.

mine started sucking air in at the connection to the tank when i fitted a new one turned out to be bad thread on connection

Has the problem occurred since replacing all the parts, or did you replace the parts in an attempt to cure the problem?

If it is a non-venting fuel cap, when it stops, try unscrewing the filler cap and listen for a rush of air into the tank.

Should a UK 77 have a vented cap, or did you have the system vented through a charcoal canister in those days (like the US models)? If it is a closed system, then a non-vented cap may be correct, and the controlled vent system could be plugged up.

it should be vented, I think Guy's nailed it.
