MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Minifin Drums - No Spacer

Could anyone advise me exactly what I need to machine off the rear of the Minifin drums to fit them to my standard 1275cc axle.

Machining is an issue - I have a Colchester 2000 lathe and a Bridgeport mill
Martyn Wilks

I did this about 12 months back. I will see if I still have the info. You have the none spaced type, right?

Malc.
Malcolm Le Chevalier

Hi malc, yes the non spaced ones, I intend to lavious hours and hours of filing, sanding and buffing to a mirror finish
Martyn Wilks

Just another thought whilst I remember... the face of the drums are a bit thicker than the standard drums, meaning:

1. your wheels are spaced out a little further
2. (More importantly from a safety viewpoint) the thread engagement of the rear wheel nuts on the studs is reduced.

I am using them anyway, but I am young and stupid. Consider longer studs whilst everything is apart.

Cheers,
Malc.

Malcolm Le Chevalier

Cheers Malc I already have longer studs on the rear (and front) as I did not like the amount of thread engagement on the minilight wheels I am using.

Off the top of my head I think I have the MG rear on the front and Cooper S fronts on the rear.

I am back again...

This is the drawing I gave to the machine shop when I had mine done. Hope it makes sense, they figured it out!

One drum rubbed ever so slightly on one side. The back plate was a bit bent out of shape. Some hammering fixed that.

Happy machining! :-)

Malc.

Malcolm,

"Do not scale" LOL!
David Billington

Thanks Malc, just what I needed and it makes perfect sense.

Did you have the inside of the drum skimmed whilst you were at it?
Martyn Wilks

Insides on mine looked good, just a little surface rust that the shoes would clean up, so didn't do anything with them.
Malcolm Le Chevalier

My non spacered fitted straight on no adjustment required.
David k Brenchley

I have now machined them to fit, however I have a couple of questions Malc,

Did yours lockup when tightened up, it seems that I need a 1mm spacer between the drive shaft hub and the drum - I do have Magic Midgets three piece drive shafts.

And,

Did you have the brake adjuster holes machined in as well, if so did it breakout into the cast iron insert.

Cheers

Martyn Wilks

The easy question first: no I did not have the adjuster holes added. I have a 1500 with the later adjusters sticking out the back so no use for the front hole.
