MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Moss SS Exhaust system

Hi all, Anyone got any experience of the full Stainless system for 1275 spridgets that Moss sell?
It's a very good price in comparison to the Maniflow mild steel systems.
My existing Maniflow manifold has just rusted through, although that was probably my fault for heat wrapping the whole thing, it rusted through on the lower front edge, probably due to holding water there.
I suspect there may be a performance difference as I have a Maniflow stage 2 but I'm honestly not sure I'd notice it now I'm older but sadly not wiser.

Problem I always have with stainless dampers is that after 2-3 years the damping material is blown out resulting in no silencing.
This is with a 1380 and doing a lot of Miles but you get the point.
Added point for me is I don’t like the sound of a stainless exhaust, it has a metalic sound in it
That might come from using thinner gauge material

Mark, I agree with O K. The exhaust not is a lot more tinny. With a maniflow system or a maniflow pipe with an RC40 rear box. The sound is deeper and not only nicer but in my experience after a medium to long journey, you arrive less tired. Having said tha, on long journeys, especially at motorway speeds I wear earplugs.

Onno and Gary have said it all. The maniflow with RC40 has a lovely bass note which is very addictive.

Onno,

A mate with a Caterham has a similar issue in that every few years he has to re-stuff the silencer to reduce the exhaust note back to acceptable. IIRC some of the common filling materials are attacked by chemicals in the exhaust which doesn't help. If I was doing it I would likely use Maftec fibre as it's durable in aggressive environments such as exhausts and 1600C classification temperature, I've seen one application of it is for supporting the honeycomb core in catalytic converters so is long term durable in such conditions. Denka fibre is a similar item. Downside is cost, it's a lot more expensive than the usual products, most likely why it isn't used.

Mark, I've just fitted a Moss GT Performance to my Mk1 Midget (1275) and am very happy with it. Cant fully comment on the sound as I've not driven it on the road but it sounds great in the garage! Quality wise it seems way better than the Maniflow and is cheaper - especially if you get it when there is a discount on. The fit on my car is good but it might need modifying for a bumperless car or one with the thin chrome bumpers - it sits low at the back.

I used to have a Maniflow on a previous car and it was ok, it didn't fit particularly well but it sounded good. But a friend bought one recently and it looked horrendous quality wise (he returned it) so I decided to try the Moss.

Thanks all (Hi Gary, long time!)
So to expand on the story a little bit I have a single across the back style Maniflow system as many moons ago I was trying to quieten down the noise. But I really don't like the look of it and it makes jacking the car up even harder so my original plan was to go back to a more traditional looking complete Maniflow system until I realised I was looking at over £500 all in!
Without measuring what I have at the moment I know the manifold is a Stage 2 which means a 1 3/4" exit and I have what looks to be a straight pipe at I assume 1 3/4" under the axle and then kicks up to meet the rear box. If I wanted to go for an RC40 box what type do I need? I see there are a few options of straight exit, side exit etc, what is the option being used?

This solves 3 problems for me, I can go for a replacement Maniflow manifold the same as my old one which is affordable, I get rid of the across the back box I have and I can stick to a budget I can afford, smiles all round!

Thanks
Mark

I've got the side exit one mounted inline to a straight pipe under the axle (which Dave B kindly bent for me many years ago... the pipe, not the axle) with exit angled towards kerbside. Pretty sure I have posted a pic of it here in the last couple of years so you may get lucky with an archive search.

Thanks Adrian, I'll have a search.

Mark, I have a stainless single box system for sale. Nearer to standard than big bore - system only, no manifold.
Clive Berry

Thanks Clive but I've decided to just replace the manifold I have and get an RC40 rear box, seems the most cost effective.
Mark M

Clive, I might be interested. I also need a manifold for my 1098 engine and haven't yet decided whether to go for a CI one, or a Maniflow. Would your system adapt to either?
