MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Organ Pedal dimensions

Can anyone please provide me with two measurements on a 1275 (1967/8) car

1. How far back from the cross member in the footwell is the base of the organ pedal

2. How far up from the bottom of the toe board is the lower hole for the bracket for the floor mounted dip switch

None of these holes are in the heritage shell

Thanks
Dominic

If you're not bothered about originality I would strongly suggest the 1500 style of pedal after having the early type stick down on me while overtaking.

I think they are all in the same place, though, I can go and measure mine if nobody else has one to hand
Rob Armstrong

I'm with rob I prefer the 1500 pedal aswell
Mine isn't a daily driver and I found the hinge part of the organ pedal started to stiffen up.
If you don't get your answer on the holes by tommorow night I'll have a measure up for you.
Dave Pratt

I hated the organ peddle from day one....the 1500 is just so much nicer and responsive

Considering its a plug and play conversion, with no modification id do the 1500 peddle and throw the organ peddle in a crevious of the boot, then you can swap out for later with the organ if need be

Domenic. The Heritage shells are built to the later spec where the dip switch is on the column. On the earlier cars with a foot operated switch, the bottom bolt hole is in the toe board with a captive nut in the void behind the panel. The top hole is in the front panel of the footwell, the other side of which can be accessed from under the bonnet, so you can use a nut and bolt. For the bottom one I suppose you could cut out a section, drill a hole, weld in a captive and re-weld the section back in. Unfortunately I can't help with measurements as I'm not where I keep my car and I'm just about to leave for holidays.

Instead of cutting out the toe board you could use a riv nut (basically a threaded rivet that you can screw a bolt into

Dominic,
being able to see the measurement in the drivers footwell on a fully build up car isn't easy unless you have a small child handy, as I didn't I done my best

as far as I could see measuring from the front face of the crossmember to the centre of the pedal hinge bolt head is 37cm

are you sure you have a Heritage shell, mine is a later shell but it has the two nuts for the bottom of the pedal hinge as captive

with the organ pedal you do need to oil the bar and hinge perhaps once or twice a year during the service work and because of the cut out in the carpets and mats grit can collect there but a vacuum out twice a year or so has been fine for mine

I've adjusted the angle my pedal rests at simply by putting a set screw in the captive nut at the cable end of the bar and then setting cable at carb
Nigel Atkins

my previous Spridget had a very early Heritage shell and had a foot dip switch fitted but I don't know if the captive nuts were there for the foot dip switch from manufacture
Nigel Atkins

Thanks to Nigel for the pedal measurement, I just need the location of the lower dip switch bracket hole, it will stay floor mounted because we are reusing the original column switch which has no dip function.

I am certain it is a heritage shell because I know the original buyer well and also have the receipt for the shell.
Dominic Clancy

have a look in the Archives as the location of the foot dip switch has been covered before, sorry but I can't remember if measurements were included or not though

I'm a column dip switch so can't help you there

I can't remember my early Heritage shell being as cobbled together as yours seems to be, perhaps it was earlier or later than yours
Nigel Atkins

In the archives are a few photos of RHD locations but no measurements. Most seem to say that holes are there for RHD, but this car is LHD. i will have a look and see if the holes are there in RHS and measure, but if anyone has info for LHD I would be very grateful

Dominic Clancy

arh, LHD that might explain the difference in finish

I'd be tempted to start a new thread titled 'LHD - foot dip switch dimensions' to catch the eyes of LHD owners
Nigel Atkins

the lower hole is 5 1/4" up from the floorpan (RHD car)
David Smith

Thanks David
Dominic Clancy

The upper hole was provided on the RH footwell, and confirmed David's kind measurement for the lower one when the bracket was added to the mix. I also had to drill a hole for the cable to come down from above on the horizontal panel. Both switch and pedal are now installed, so thanks to all.

Next question following hot on the heels of this one.
