MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Parts Request

Hi,

Following on from getting my 1965 MK2 1098cc back on the road since the 1980's, I'm now dealing with some teething issues.

Issue 1.

I have an oil leak on the seal of the crank pulley. The engine refurb company replaced the oil seal with an upgraded one, but it is still leaking.

There is a slight line of wear on the pulley and the option is to replace the pulley or fit a speedy sleeve.

Rather than buy a rubbish modern replacement does anyone have a spare pulley for a 1098cc in very good condition, preferably NOS, that they are willing to sell me please?

Issue 2.

On tuning the car we found that the base plate of the distributor is warn in the groove that allows it to slide. It caused the points arm to move so that it isn't flush with the spindle and moves around to much.

Does anyone have a new(ish) base plate for a 25d that is in good condition that they are willing to sell please?

Many thanks

James

Hi,

Yes saw that one. Looks second hand and so have asked for another photo which shows the groove.

No response yet

thanks though

Does anybody know if a 1275 front pulley/ damper will fit the earlier 1098engine / still clear chassis etc ?

Just asking as I believe I have somewhere a nos 1275 pulley in an original BMC box and waxed paper - box probably worth more than damper judging by the memorabilia prices for empty Castro grease cans !

Hi Richard,

Did a little research and I think the top one is for the 1275.

James Paul

Correct James,
The 1275 has a in built damper to help reduce vibrations in the crank.
I think the oil seal is the same part no but not sure about if it can be fitted or would be a good/ bad plan !!!

There’s not a lot of clearance between the chassis and the nut.

The 1275 must be wider still
James Paul

The nut sits inside the damper on the 1275 version !

Which 1098 is it, large or small mains. I ask as I've a 1275 TV damper pulley on my large mains 1098 crank in a 1420cc engine. I don't think it can do any harm.

The 1275 damper fits all the engines including the 948. To fit it to an engine in the car it may be necessary to undo the front engine mountings to clear the cross member.
its a good upgrade

I have had a 1275 type damper fitted to my 948 (well 998) for years. No problems.
