MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Preferred Sealant

I've typically had a tube a blue Hylomar lying around in my toolbox, largely cos my dad always swore by the stuff and "it was developed by Rolls Royce".

I need to pick up some new sealant and have seen some people 'swearing by" Wellseal, which is also developed by Rolls Royce.

I don't have a specific task in mind, but will be sealing rocker boxes, water pumps, and cylinder head gaskets. I've seen that Rover V8 head gaskets sealed with Wellseal come fairly highly recommended.

So what sealant do my fellow forum members recommend, like, and equally important, avoid like the plague ?

Blue Hylomar for water pump gaskets.

Anyone used the Red Hylomar?

I've used blue Hylomar for years, but I don't use anything on a head gasket.

I don't use anything on a rocker gasket, either. The cork seals quite well as it is.

my uncle swears by paint ! I guess he would be using enamel or similar gloopy stuff but I cant say I know anyone else that uses it

I don't use any sealer on either pump or head gaskets. If it looks like you need a sealant you need to prepare the surfaces better.
To hold a gasket in place during assembly I use Loctite 534 Gasket positioner.
In place of a gasket (so-called instant gasket) I use either Loctite 598 or 5910.

I tend to rely on very clean surfaces but, if they are a bit pitted from corrosion I used to swear by Red Hermatite but so few people seem to sell it (does it still exist?) so I've taken to using a grey product called Loctite 5922.

On old fashioned copper-composite gaskets I always used to use Hermatite but these days the gaskets are generally so good, I don't use anything.

Cork gaskets are fine as long as they stay in the right place. I 'glue' them to the rocker-cover using a clear 'instant gasket', let it set for an hour then slightly grease the side that contacts the top of the cylinder-head so when it tightens down it stays in position relative to the cover.

Here's a glued one from my 1500 rebuild..

You can get the red stuff on ebay. I bought a tube to help with sealing of new core plugs on my engine block.

I always found the blue stuff a bit rubbish it was just a bit oozey and slimey. Especially if in contact with oil.

But IMO if you need sealant your gasket is not doing its job properly :-D
