MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Propshaft Balancing

OK... so I am neck deep in the post-Anglesey track day fixes! The rear axle is off, all the rear suspension is off, the rear brakes are in bits and I'm going to refresh the fuel system too whilst I have access.

It could be a good time to dig out the prop shaft for the first time in 8 years.

I am wondering if anyone has ever had a prop balanced, if so, where at and was it worth it? Or am I overthinking it all and if it's not broke, don't fix it?

Cheers,
Malc.

I had one shortened and balanced about 35 years ago when I put a Ford gearbox in my Sprite. The place was down the Feeder Road area of Bristol, whether it's still there I couldn't say but plenty of places can do it. Was it worth it I couldn't say either as it was part of the job but never had any issues with it.

I remember asking a similar question in the middle of my resto.

Was told by these lovely people here not to bother. So didn't.

I had some surface corrosion and I thought might cause the prop shaft to become out of balance, but they said it was probably to small to make a difference.

I just cleaned it up, cured the rust and painted over it.

I've not noticed any issues.

I've never had a prop shaft balanced, even on the race cars.

Malc,
You could try the diy approach with a couple of jubilee clips as in this video!

I had mine shortened and balanced when i fit my overdrive box needed 25mm taking off, it did fit without shortening but had no movement at all in it.
