MG Midget and Sprite Technical - rad shroud bottom panel

does anyone know or have a photo please of whether the bottom panel of the (removable) rad shroud goes to the inside or outside of the bottom panel of the fixed part of the rad box?

sorry David S I still can't use Archives because of internet connection problems

the rad shroud is on but not nicely lined up - I can't remember having any difficulties when I had to take the rad and shroud out and back in 5 years ago (twice in a week as I was sent me the wrong cooling fan, I checked it worked but not the direction, won't make that mistake again)

someone else has taken it out and replaced it since then (you'd be best not to ask why)

the rad shroud is missing most of it's captives so doesn't fit as easily as when new

The cowl (fixed part) has slots and the rad shroud bottom ought to have two small (#10?) captive nuts for the screws to engage.

However, most leave the screws out because they don't do anything except prevent a rattle, I think.

As far as the radiator goes, it ought not to care which side that flange ends up on, if yours is so badly bent that it isn't immediately obvious, just so long as the assembly fits snugly and without too much air leak around its edges.

The way mine fit... thinking back so be warned

It was 2 parts... and I left the lower part and it had 2 u shaped slots the rad portion had a panal that fit behind the lower panal by maybe 1/2 inch and had to screws but I never took them fully out just left them loose and they slid into the 2 u shaped slots once everything was linned up and secure I tighted the 2 screws in the slot...it was a fiddle job the 1st few times but then it got easier the more I did it

But I always kept the rad and shroud as one unit... 4 bolts in total held it togather and in place

71 crossflow rad setup if that helps

I hear ya on the internet... it sucks royally bad, and it appears to be everywhere ... maybe we are looking at a world wide crash, or you and I are being directly targeted by the NSA

Break out the aluminum foil hats everyone, or those wifi radio transmitters the NSA uses will melt your brain

Norm,
you've probably explained why I can't remember those bottom fixings from before, probably they weren't there last time I put the shroud back in

my shroud has lost its captive nuts there

it makes sense to me then that the removable part goes behind which is a shame as that's how I have it and not happy with the alignment but I suppose it's all secure so can stay as it is
Nigel Atkins

Prop,
thanks for info

NSA don't bother with me but they do some posters here

my internet disruptions is just problems with wires in a box on a street I guess, different companies share the use of connection boxes now so they are not looked after as well as they used to be
Nigel Atkins

Not quite sure what the question is, but here's a picture that might be used to elaborate.

White wishbones ?...interesting.

I was thinking of doing mine in caution bright yellow

all sorted thanks

I used an idea my wife reminded me of and a scissor jack and bit of wood and used up all my patience on the car for the next x years, I did run out of patience (and swear words) at one stage but came back to it then of course things started to fall into place

I think cleaning the muck off the shroud might have taken away what was holding the heavy duty semi-captive plate that a PO had installed so that was a three-handed job but without the room to do so

the only satisfaction I got was fishing out the nuts I dropped into the cavity, the two screws I'll probably just cover in something sticky so that muck build up will stop them from rattling

enjoyment and satisfaction has been almost zero and would be lower if I didn't get a couple of little jobs done I've been putting off for years

I've got loads of smooth white hammerite Prop. So when I had the wishbones off, I gave them a coat. Looks better than rust. LOL.

Actually, they were both badly painted re-con's so I painted them. I use silver hammerite on the stub axles and disc back plates. Anything to amuse the mot inspector. :).

White is a pretty good choice for parts that might develop cracks because it makes the cracks more visually apparent. I had a semi with aluminum hubs on the steer axel. I had painted them white, and it saved me.

During inspection I saw the crack, and when I took it apart, the flange carrying the 10 wheel studs was broken leaving only 5 holding the wheel on. And, the 5 still holding were all in a row leaving the other half completely unsupported. For this reason I always thought the baby moon hub caps covering the center of the hub were a bad idea.
