MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear spring modifications

Hi Has anybody taken the rear springs apart to soften the spring rate. If so any pointers like which spring and what happened. Thanks.

Oops I see the title :-)

Rear springs can be re tempered by your local spring company. Most of them have the kit to make and temper commercial vehicle springs that are like our rear springs. They also refurb although a midge spring is small in their terms.

You need to find one and ask.

The nationals will cost a part of your body so finding the local is much advantageous. They may even take the springs out and 'garage' the car while doing it. Mine won't they just want the springs delivered to work on.

My local is midland motor springs. Very helpful, knowledgeable and willing at reasonable cost.

Small ish family business. Find one near you like that.

Which springs?, the approach would differ between 1/4 and 1/2 elliptics.
David Billington

If these are half elliptics drop me an e-mail with the details of the numbers of the leaves and I'll let you know what I think based on my experience of leaf spring testing with my Intercomp spring tester.
Daniel Stapleton

Hi Guys, semi eliptic springs.
s page

I modified some good 1500 used rear half ellipticals to use on a 1275, I wanted them to drop a bit, I think I just lopped bits of leaves until they were very similar to the original 1275s, I can't measure easily now as I coated them with masses of grease and wrapped them in Denso tape to keep the grease in and the muck out.

My Frogeye 1/4 ellipticals have variously had leaves removed and leaves swapped to an upside down position, I didn't shorten any of them.
