MG Midget and Sprite Technical - REAR wheel bearings. INFORMATION request.

This should only be a short thread I would think. I started this to keep it separate, and preventing from getting lost in the front wheel bearing issue, and to keep that thread "clean" as it were.

I received another email reply from Moss, but regarding REAR wheel bearings.

As they are looking into the replacement front wheel bearings issue, they asked if there are any problems known about the rear replacements, so that they can investigate that too, --- if it should be the case.

I've not heard of any.

So are there any known problems with replacement rear wheel bearings that anybody has experienced, or is aware of others experiencing?

If so please either post here, and or email me so I can pass it back to Moss.

Cheers
Lawrence Slater

sorry Lawrence this isn't going to help much except to say no problems, as the rears are the 41 year old, 99,800 mile, originals.
Which is a nice change from the front ones which are Moss supplied replacements and required renewing after four years and 15k.

Hi,

it's ONLY the NEW (NON-RHP) replacement REARS that MOSS are interested in hearing about. Has anyone had trouble with them,--- from ANY supplier actually?

As far as I know, the replacement rears are fine, but maybe somebody knows different?
Lawrence Slater

No issues with rear bearings, and probably because the size is commonly used on other, more recent vehicles.

In fact, the 207FF (used by Subaru) is a nice option for anyone with a persistent leak from the bearing side of the hub.

Usually hear of more problems with the rear seals/gaskets than the bearings I would have thought.

me, me, me.

I had problems with rear bearings not lasting very long/feeling loose 'out of the box'.

I bought some RHP bearings - not kits, just bearings - about 20 of them IIRC. I only ever used one pair though.

Just to clarify...

On the race car, I managed to snap the end off a Peter May competition halfshaft due to a sloppy bearing.

Subsequently, I would pull the halfshafts and check the bearings after every couple of races and I was changing them regularly, which is why I bought so many RHP bearings. Having fitted the one pair, I never had any more problems.

I replaced my old R&M (maybe Reeves & Mortimer!) 36L with Malaysia's finest skf 6207/c3 some time ago.

I have in stock some 6207 2rrs cheap bearings to try some day...

Dave, any of those cheaper rear wheel bearings come from Moss?
Lawrence Slater

I had rear bearings that turned in the hub. But I cannot remember if they were RHP. Anyway, it was really an issue of a worn hub rather than a bearing fault. I reinstalled them with some bearing fit loctite and problem solved. Probably should have used the stuff in the first place.

IIRC the rear wheel bearing is a standard deep groove ball bearing and nothing special about it so you should be able to source them from many suppliers the price dependant on whether you want cheap or a good makers name to go by. Being such a common size they are comparatively cheap regardless and can easily be had with shields or lip seals.

I bought some Moss bearings 3 years ago and have no problems with them so far.

Lawrence

I don't believe I bought any from Moss.

I used to buy a lot of stuff from Roversport/Unipart. Some of their bearing kits were RHP (IIRC) and some were NSK. I think I had an issue with the NSK kits.

Ok thanks all.

I'll give it a little longer to see if anyone else posts of rear bearing problems, and then I'll let moss know what was said.
