MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Removing Frog Fuel Tank

I need to drop the tank on my Frogeye. I understand that the filler tube is part of the tank and not removable and therefore I am going to need to get the back quite high to allow enough room to clear the tank and filler below the body. I have standard axle stands which I would normally put below the axle but that doesn't seem to leave an excess of room. Forewarned is forearmed - am I going to struggle any more than "normal" working under the rear end? (Meaning, is this going to be a s*d of a job?)
Graeme W

can you not put the stands under the front of the leaf springs and gain the suspension movement in extra height?
David Smith

Check that you don't have a later tank as many have been replaced over the years. Place the axle stands under the spring mounts.
See you Sunday?

Yes I placed the stands under the mounts. If the tank has the original solid filler then the rubber boot seal may hold the tank and you will have to gently ease the tank out. It is worth checking the seal before you refit the tank to prevent leaks. I ran some soapy water round the seal when I refitted the tank as pushing it from underneath can be a bit of a struggle. Another pair of hands really helps!

Good point about the spring mounts. I'm not all that happy about axle stands there - never seems quite so secure as around the axle tube, but I can see that if the spring mounts are lower than the axle, it will give the opportunity to lift higher. I'm not sure supsension movement comes into it? I can't visualise without looking whether the axle tube is lower than the spring mounts when the car has its weight on the wheels, or higher!

Alan: The tank has been replaced in the last couple of years I believe (it looks like it too) although I think it is still the Frog standard size 24x12x "5 and a bit"
I calculated that out as Frog capacity inorder to calibrate the bamboo cane. One inch = one gallon near enough. More accurate than the average gauge but lacks convenience.
Graeme W

Got the tank down today. Float system is ok but there is a broken wire in the run back to the gauge "somewhere". It might be close to the tank but otherwise I shall just run a new one right back to the gauge.

I think I need to consider a total rewire of the car!
