MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Seat Foam

My seat foam has expired. Well and truly flat and degrading happily. Not an original seat by the by - 70's bucket seats by the look of things, but I think the principle is similar to the MG originals. Some advice then please.

What sort of foam am I looking for? Recommendations as to a comfortable supplier or type of foam I could purloin from a well known auction site would be most welcome.

The webbing underneath looks fine. Can I put anything twixt webbing and foam to improve matters further?

Oggers,

we're in the same boat.
I'm considering trying these from the MGB Hive but have no idea how good (or bad they are)

These people down the road from me supply foam and do car retrims so ought to be able to sell you something suitable.

Might be worth a call to see what advice they can offer.

Oggers, I once did a "temporary" repair on a standard 1500 seat by sliding a piece of hardboard betwen the webbing and the foam. It revived it pretty well so temporary became permanant for the remaining several years of ownership - or longer!

I have also made new foam basis for my Frogeye project using a foam block sold for furniture seating. This came from a local Dunelm Mills outlet with the advantage over online suppliers that I could sit and bounce up and down on it in the shop to assass the firmness of it. ;-) Cutting to shape was done with an electric carving knife bought from a charity shop for £2. Final contouring with a flap wheel applied VERY lightly. Wear a mask!

Another possibility suggested to me was to get a rear seat base from a scrapyard car as a source for the foam.

Many thanks. Initial thinking is to either use a high density foam block or even possibly a memory foam block - luxury! - from fleabay. The original is not contoured.

I too thought of ply or similar as reinforcement, but the webbing isn't too bad. I'll sit and see....

Oggers, I should have said, the Dunelm Mills for I got was high density, 4" thick. They did other blocks too. And the hardboard insert just spreads the load over more webbing. Mine looked ok too but it still made quite a difference. Worth a try if you have some thin ply or hardboard lying around.
