MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Slave push rod 1275

The old slave push rod shows some minor (!) wear in the hole, so I ordered a new one. The new one is about 3/4 the length of the old one, which is near enough 4" or 10cm. What is the correct length?

Dominic Clancy

Hi Dominic, Just read your thread, I have the same
problem. mine is a 998 unit on a rib gear box,

Dom. The overall length of the 948 and 1098 pushrod is 69mm. Moss part number 13H21. The 1275 one is 75mm. Moss part number 13H3655. I just used a 1275 one on my 1098 with Ford type 9 box to gain extra clearance.
I suppose if you find you do need 100mm you could cut a bit off the old one and weld it onto the new one.

Dominic,

Did you figure out the stuck in second gear problem?

Not really sure what the second gear problem was, I just pulled it apart and it all worked when I put it back together again.

As it turned out the gearbox mounting rubbers were too thin and one had already split from its backing plate, so I would have had to pull everything again anyway.

I also have found that the gasket for the speedo drive cannot be obtained any more so what is the fix here ?

I assume that the speedo drive can be installed with the gearbox in place......
Dominic Clancy

Do you have a shim for the gearbox mounts? Item no 65.

Yes, the speedo drive can be fitted with the 'box in place IIRC.

What sort of gasket is it?

Don't lengthen the pushrod, all it will do is push the pistone further into the bore. This will be harmless unless the piston bottoms out, in which case the release bering is constantly loaded and fails prematurely.

It's not like the Mini one which retracts fully after the clutch is used, instead it stays where it comes to rest when the cltuch is let off and so self adjusts, ready for the next application of clutch.

Yes i had the shim in place. The replacement blocks are 3 or 4 mm thicker than the old ones, so they fill the space correctly when the shim is used. No idea where the others came from, they were in the many boxes of bits that came with the car.

The gasket is the one Moss has as part

There are lots of reasons why a longer pushrod maybe required of which the most likely is a heavily re-faced or worn flywheel clutch face.

Maybe time to make this intoban adjustable piece like rivergate did with the datsun 5 speed conversion

Daniel, fair enough - but only if the piston is threatening to come of of the cylinder when the pedal is on the floor. However, the great majority of pushrods I have seen lengthened were done when they should not have been, and the lengthening achieved nothing other than premature clutch failure through no full releasing, or a bent clutch arm through pushing it so far it hit the end of its hole in the bellhousing.
The latter is a factor to check even if there is good cause to lengthen the rod.
