MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Small machining job - anyone?

I need a small machining job doing, can anyone help - I'd pay for the work.

I need a piece of 22mm (maybe 21mm)bar diameter drilled and then tapped 7/16 UNF. Then the last 3mm of each end turned down to 18mm (approx). Then I need the piece separated in the middle so that each item is 13mm high {3mm at 18mm the rest 22/21mm).

I realise I could probably just use a couple of 7/16 UNF nuts welded together but tthis way seems neater.

Feel free to guess what I'm making?

Nice try Bob but not correct.

I was thinking rocker cover nuts, but they are too readily available ready made. It has to be something more one-off than that! Spacer bolts to alter the rake of your racing seat perhaps?
Guy

To adjust the rake of your windscreen like the big Healeys.

I am really pleased for you Robbie and occasionally I get the diagnosis correct which us a bonus.

You ought to place a post at the end of the original thread to record it for the archives.

Bob,
I think he did, I think he just saw your post here and wanted to thank you

Hmm

Quite a big thread Daniel (the one you want put on two dollops of steel)

Something rear suspensioney maybe?
Panhard - Watts Linky?

OK I give up?

hmmm again

What size is the front trunnion thread? Tubular wishbones perhaps?
Bill1

Rear suspensioney it is! But not Panhard or Watts.

Pair of trailing arms then? Location points

I expect most of us have had ideas bubbling along on the back burner.

Do keep us informed please.

Daniel,

If your not in to much of a hurry I may be able to sort something out next week some time - just need to find the correct tapping drill !

Assume you meant milds steel - just found a little stock of 22 and lots of 28ish mm !

Rear suspension? Spacer bushes for aligning the bottom end of tubular shocks to connect at the spring plates then.

Hi Daniel,

Where are you based and when do you need this doing by?

Hi Richard,

Yes please!

I'm almost never in much of a hurry though having finally wallpapered my lounge (it's a through lounge) after starting DIY in it 8 years ago, I should have more time for Spridget projects. The lounge was delayed in part by cable conduit for surround sound and then stereo speaker cabling etc, required plastering etc, etc.

Hi Christian,

I'm tempted to say yes so I can make a spare set but I haven't made my spare 4 clock dash yet...

Both,

You might want to make some for yourself. This threaded part is the boss that is welded onto the bracket for the front leaf spring hanger. What I'm going to make is (as per page 108-109) a raised mounting bracket.

I'm advised that the way raised brackets are normally made is by cutting and inserting metal. However, I've bought some box channel (ebay) which I'll cut to make U channel and then fabricate an entire section to weld to a base.

I don't actually need to lower the car anymore so once the brackets are fitted I'll reduce the thickness of the U-bolt spacers.

Daniel
I might be able to help you out with this, as I am doing a similar thing at the moment, although I am not trying to lower the car also, I am fitting a slipper bush (a la Escort) at the front of the rear spring, so I too am fabricating new front spring mounts, I already have some bushing tapped at 7/16 unf but I need to confirm the o/d for you. I will post later today.

Daniel
Unfortunately what I have is threaded to 1/2 unf, but if you get stuck I can probably get some made up at 7/16unf.
