MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Speedo removal

The glass & chrome ring on my speedo are loose & vibrating, so I need to remove the speedo.

I'm not sure how to remove the trip reset knob, looks like there is a pin holding it in place, how do I remove the pin without breaking things or is there something else holding it in place ?

Thanks, Alan.
Alan Cotterill

It must be a 1500 speedo...no trip counter on my 1275
Prop and the Blackhole Midget

Alan, there is a small roll pin which *should* just push out! If you're just removing the speedo from the dash, I don't think you need to remove the knob IIRC.

Prop,
You poor Americans only had tiny speedos with the padded dash, so probably not enough room in there for a trip.

This is what a UK 4" speedo looks like.

Just happened to have one lying on the desk. Removing the pin allows the black sleeve and knob to be removed.
However, I wiggled this one out of the dash as is.

Thanks dave.... I Learned something new...i didnt realize you had the incorrect speedos over there :P

1275? Take off the speedo drive; the speedo comes out complete with trip reset knob , just undo the two thumbwheels off the rear threads, remove the "legs" holding the body behind the dash and pull the whole thing towards you out the front of the dash
David Cox

I did as David Cox suggests for removing and it worked

BUT

when I replaced it the extra length of the attatched knob spindle caught on the dah and now I can't reset the trip - so remove knob spindle, at least when refitting dail to dash

hamfisted Nige - you have to feed it through at a funny angle then twist it anticlockwise IIRC.
David Smith

Dave I done exactly that, feed through at a funny angle, twisted - and hamfisted

mind, I did take two attempts to break it, caught it on dash first time, got it out, then tried again and broke it, I fear I might have been a little impatient as I usually am when working on my car, I'm fine with anyone else's car but have no time for mine

Nigel

Are you sure there isnt a manual for that...hahaha.

If i had a woman cook me dinner for every time i stuck something in a tight hole at a funny angle then twisted it anti clockwise to shove it in all the way, only to break it off during withdrawl....well, heck id be a happy camper

Prop...speedy hole filler

Prop,
as you wont be able to see or hear it I'll have to write it here - your post has me in stunned silence ! :)
