MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Starter Motor

A question on inertia starer motors. Mine decided to stop working. I pulled it out which as you know is a pain, sorted a bad connection on one of the brushes, gave it a clean up and tested it off the car with some jump leads with it clamped in a vice. All spins OK. My question is if it spins is it OK will it have a enough power to turn the engine, or is there a way of testing properly prior to putting it back in the car ? I don't want to keep removing and putting back engine ancillaries just to test it on the car to find out its no good.

Best to put it back on.

How did you fix the bad connection?
Dave O'Neill2

Soldered it back together and tested with Multimeter, then stuck in the vice and hooked up a battery
Ed H

I once had a problem on a J-type starter where the brushes became detached from the terminal post.
I resoldered it, but if I cranked for more than a couple of seconds, the heat going through it would melt the solder.

Autozone, oriellys, sears, advance auto ECT ECT...they all do FREE starter testing
Prop and the Blackhole Midget

It's a bloody long way for Ed to go though Prop. I think the airfare may outweigh the value of free testing.
Jeremy Cogman

Nahh....just ship your self over night in a air fed ex box...$50 and they will never know

Hahaha

Spoke to my local auto electrician he said they do what I did , throw it in a vice crank it and put a bit of wood on it to see if it slows up !! So much for technology. Anyway put it back on car and all OK. So I won't be Fed Exing myself to the US.

What happens to a starter if molten solder goes through it? I'd be fitting new brushes ASAP, just because I'm paranoid like that.
Growler

The brushes are soldered to the terminals, thats what was in need of repair so there is no more solder in their than was present beforehand.
