MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Stub axle grease nipple

Hi all,

I'm building up some new disc brake stub axles and hub assemblies to put on my frogeye and have a question regarding the two grease nipples which screw into the stub axle.

One nipple is ninety degree, and the other forty five degree.

The question is:-

Should the higher nipple be the ninety degree nipple on disc braked cars?

I'd appreciate any guidance on this.

Many thanks

Phil

Despite the fact I grease these every 3 months plus the day before MoT I had to go outside and look - on my 1275, the 45 is at the top and 90 bottom, which makes sense to get the the grease gun (end/thingy) on the nipples.

X2 same on my car. If I'd known you were going to look Nigel I would have stayed on the sofa.
Isn't it in the Book?
Greybeard

Thanks Nigel and Greybeard and I'll go with the arrangement you have.

When I dismantled the stub axles, I'm sure that the 45 degree grease nipples were at the top, and that definitely seems the most practical way around.

The reason for questioning it was that the Moss catalogue indicates that the 90 degree goes at the top, and the 45 at the bottom??

I hadn't found any other publication which sets out which way they should go.

Unfortunately, parts catalogues aren't always accurate about orientation.

Whatever you do, don't fit your inner fulcrum pins the way they are shown in the Moss catalogue!

It's as Dave has said, there are many errors and omissions in all databases such as catalogue and drawings and the errors seem to be copied.

I used to think the factory Parts Catalogue would be the one to follow which was stupid of me as I know from experience that mistakes can be missed or ignored by those that compile and use these databases/catalogue/drawings.

The Moss swap around is interesting as it suggests the position varies depending on model.

Thinking about it, they're both the same thread so it'd probably be just as easy to use four 45 degree nipples anyway.

Grey,
the Driver's Handbook has lots of info on the front suspension and even a drawing showing the nipples but the angle of the view makes the top nipple ambiguous to its angle

- but -

in my copy of the good book, the other three nipples (yes three) are shown clearer about their orientation so by a process of elimination with the two we're looking at I needn't have gone outside to look as

... yes, once again the Driver's Handbook had the answer. :)
